  • Yes, rain is pretty tricky. You can get rain jackets with pitzips, vents out the back but you will sweat pretty much anyway. I do generally delayer down to a simply bike jersey when I know I will be wearing my rain jacket (like today, rained to and from work!). I generally very very rarely wear rain pants for the same reason, you'll just sweat on the inside unless it is winter and just above freezing. There is really not much one can do or I can say about the rain. If you have a very flat ride, you can ride slower but usually that is not the case, usually I'm hurrying to get out of the rain... But on the plus side, I find rain in the morning a bit more rare than rain in the afternoon..

Don't forget the reflective stuff when it's raining, I have a yellow Illuminute Nashbar rain jacket that has the pit zips, a vent on the back and a long tail to cover my butt from road spray...

Ha, depends on the roads by you, I have a lot of narrow roads by me and where I work is somewhat industrial.. But your bike needs fenders and lights (red in the back and a white blinky in the front) and you need rain gear for yourself.... Kind of makes it somewhat expensive if you want to properly ride in the rain...

I knew what you were talking about but had read the next post and hoped you were going to get blocked. Clay emailed me his trip report.
To explain the math, basically after a number of calculations what you have done is subtract your birth year from 2010 which gives your age (subtract an extra 1 if you haven't reached your birthday yet) and multiply # of peaks by 100 so left digit is # of peaks

this is why # of peaks can't be 10 or more because it must be single digit
I'm in school finishing my degree and CFP designation through December, so maybe this winter, but not doing too much before then.
actually I was kind of celebrating today as a complaint and potential arbitration (which would have been my first in 23 years) was denied and rejected by our firm, so I made it a slow day and bought lunch and dessert for the office. I'm sorry I missed meeting you at the ADK BBQ. Next gathering perhaps.
Cool, I started commuting once again after relocating to Pittsfield. The roads here aren't very good cause they seem to be old and narrow but the scenery is a bit better than NJ. It's also a bit hillier than NJ and I'm at a higher elevation so it'll be colder this winter! Glad to hear that your hiking has gotten better, I'm sure your overall health is better too!
You mean you are commuting on a 38+ year old bike??? What kind of gears do you have? Downtube friction shifters??? Banana seat? :)

Sounds like a great step though... Many people, rightfully so, tout the physical benefits of bike commuting, but I find it also mentally clearing, especially the ride home.. Many times I am tired from a full day of work and dreading the ride home, but after a 1/4 mile or so, I feel I am recharged for the rest of the day...

I do try to vary my commute, just for variety, if you have different ways to get home, it's nice to see different things...
That's good, eventually you'll get a system which will work for you. I hope you have storage space at work, I would keep things there like extra clothes, emergency rain gear (especially in the summer!), food, a towel, an extra tube and tools.... Money (I didn't always carry a wallet), etc... One thing that I thought was great is that coworkers would always bring over the free muffins and food from the meetings to me cause they knew I was always hungry and would eat anything!
Quite well, thank you! I'm living and working in the ADKs this summer, so that has been awesome. Been doing a TON of paddling, and then working on the ADK HH. How about you?
