Olympus Stylus Tough! 3000 You may want to look at the newer versions of this camera. Mine is a simple point and shoot. I have use it for 3 years now and it is still going strong. Waterproof and shockproof with reason. Read the fine print. It has 12 mp. The proprietory battery pack is...

Merino Wool Base Layer Top for Summer Hiking

Second, Doug Paul's cooments Doug's comment capture my experience with super light weight wool. I also find wool to have a wider temperature comfort range then poli pro. For day or overnight hikes, poli pro is fine. For longer or more serious stuff, wool is my 'go to' base layer. Love...

Will the Dry River Trail be opened.

For a number of years now the NFS has listed this trail a closed to all users. A call to the WMNF was inconclusive; 'call back later in the year.' Does anyone have info on if and when this trail will be reopened. I am hoping to use it for a loop of the southern presidentials in July.

    Retiring to Maine?

Mane for Retirement I am in a similar situation; on the verge of retiring to Maine. Suggest looking in the 'greater' Farmington area for the mountains. It has a modern hospital and is a college town. I like the Belfast area for the coast.

Banff or Jasper Nat'l Park - 4-5 night route recommendation?

Stanley Mitchel Hut and the Ice Line Trail A nice 3 day trip is to hike into the Stanley Mitchel hut. Spend the next day relaxing and exploring. On the third day, hike out by the Ice Line Trail with its spectaculare views of the valley. If you get to the hut early, you may have a chance of...

    Mittens for really cold hands

Dachstein Mittens Teo, thank you for the spelling correction. To much rushing. The mittens are made about 20 km east of Ramsan am Dachstein in Pruggern, Austria.

    Mittens for really cold hands

Mittens for winter Picked up a pair of boiled wool mittens from a family business in Austria (Huber Austria Woolens). While these are not Dashstein, they are the next best thing given that you can not find Dashstein anymore. Very roomy in the finger box so they can accomodate a hot pack. I...

    I need a good hat

Best winter toque I purchase a toque a few years ago from MEC. Best winter hat I have ever had. Looking at the label it is made of Icelandic Lopi Wool. Hand made. About 1/2 inches thick. Very warm and very breathable. :)

    microspikes or crampons

Repairing Micor Spikes One other thing about Micro Spikes; Bring needle nose pliers (or Letterman). Not one trip goes by that someones Micro Spikes need repair. The links connecting the chain an spike to the rubber binding are not fused. They can and do come apart on a regular basis. Easy...

    microspikes or crampons

Micro Spikes Did the Gale River up and over S and N Twin last Sunday. Very icey and good amount of snow at the higher elevations. Micro spikes worked fine. One in our party had 10 point crampon. This was fine but somewhat an overkill.

"Long" trails in greater Boston / metrowest

Mid State Trail A little farther afeild is the Mid State Trial. 92 plus mile and than you can add on the Wapak trail. The north end of this trail is particularly nice to hike. Very rural and woodsey. I would highly recommend from Ashburnham up to S. and N Pac Manadnoc in stages.

    Ticks are back in force

Ticks are out in force! Ticks are out in force in Northern MA. Came back from running the dog in the local conservation area. She was covered with ticks. I on the other hand only had 3 on my legs and one with its head in the back of my hand.

    Mt. Tom Reservation

Saturday, Jan 31st. Kay-Bee, Keystone Ext, DOC, M&M, Quarry, and back on the Kay-Bee. 2 inches of light snow on top of a ice crust. Very easily punched through making for some tough snowshoeing in spots. Trails were passable and cleared from the December Ice storm damage. M&M trail was...

    Camping in frigid weather?

My 2 Cents The balaclava with a fleece head band brought down to cover the nose. Works, I promise. If you get a chance, view the DVD 'Winter Walk 2003 to Ungava Bay' produced by Rollin Thurlow of Maine. Great talk through for sleeping in the cold. Also, very funny. :)

MA State Parks & the Ice Storm

Has anyone seen a listing of MA state parks impacted by the Ice Storm? I am looking at doing some hiking/snowshoeing in Central or Western MA. I know the trails at Mt. Wachusett are closed until further notice. I saw the listing for NH parks. MA DCR has not responded to my e-mail and there...
