    Keeping toes toasty

Just some additional thoughts. I strongly agree with a previous post: get some good winter hiking boots. They do not have to be plastic mountaineering boots. I have a pair of Sorrel Conquest and they do very well on day hikes up and down mountains. You can always tell your wife that they are...

    Winter Stove Favorites

Wood Stove gets my vote. TomD asks: Jasper,What kind of stove was it? Was it one of the Ti Goat barrel shaped take-apart stoves? What kind of tent? Well, I understand the stove is made in Maine specificly for the Conovers. It is a typical box trail stove but with double fold out shelves. It...

    Winter Stove Favorites

Wood Stove gets my vote. I am just back from a 5 day winter snowshoeing trip with the Conover's (North Woods Way). I can tell you that a wood stove in a tent is the way to go. Nothing like -15 degrees F outside and 75 degrees inside the cotton canvas tent. We measure the temperature at the...

    Retiring my old hard shell?

Looking for your experienced based recommendations on a new hard shell. My old shell is wearing thin at the shoulders and it is time for a new one. The use and features I am looking for are: Winter above tree-line use. Multi-day backpacking in spring and fall. Attached large hood. I prefer...

    Shell for snowshoeing

Snowshoeing Like the previous responses to your question I use a light/midweith Capilene zip-T over a polypro t-shirt. The one addition is a vest that is wind-blocking on the front and non-wind blocking on the back. I have used this for years and it is a great combination. Too Hot, un-zip...

    MEC sleeping bags: Baffled construction?

MEC Winter Bag Given that it is a new bag, I suggest you take it into the MEC store in Montreal. I had a similar problem with one of their winter down bag quite some time ago (mid-90's). They were very helpful and replaced the bag. Still have this 'new' bag and it continues to perform...

Do you like to snowshoe / wear snowshoes?

Snowshoe I keep my snowshoes in the car for any reasonable opportunity to use them (and even some unreasonable ones as well). It is Sunday afternoon. I have about 9 inches of new snow here in Northern Massachusets. Looks like the dog will have to posthole while I float on top when she goes...

    Lost hunter blames GPS

He had a compass! Per Doug: 'He does mention in the video interview that he had a compass, but he could only use it during the day - at night time he used the GPS screen light to see his compass but he could only see the "southern needle".' Southern Needle? Do we know what was in his thermos...

    Lost hunter blames GPS

So this guy is experienced? Let me see: he is out in the Maine woods in winter--- No compass, No map, No flash light, and does not appear to be familier with the GPS. Is this part of his educational experience?

    plastics + snowshoes = ??

Mukluks Since you will be using toboggans, weight should not be a problem. I suggest mukluks for the trail if they work well with your snowshoes, plastic boots for the climbing and Neo with felt liners for around camp. On a flat snowshoing trip, in cold dry weather (say below 20F), I have...
