    2011 spring wildflower thread

Thanks for the correction. Those yellow flowers, whatever they are, come up every year in my front yard. So probably someone did plant them many years ago. More, these from Holt's Ledge Trail on May 28: Canada Mayflower (Maianthemum canadense) on Holt's Ledge Trail by Elizabeth W.K., on...

Black fly reports for your area?

All of a sudden the black flies have taken over. Last week in my area (Lyme, NH) they were not so bad. Yesterday (May 25) they were out in force and no amount of bug dope was keeping them at bay. I HATE black flies! Must keep reminding myself that they are important pollenators of...

A day in the life of a hiker....

I keep much of my stuff in my pack, ready to go too. However, I definitely need to recheck and add or subtract stuff before each hike. Previously I have ended up hiking all summer carrying cross-country ski waxes and all winter carrying bug repellent.

A day in the life of a hiker....

Very funny, and with a lot of points I can relate to. I generally try to put my pack together the night before, since my brain is relatively non-functional early in the morning. I still forget stuff; but it helps. On a more serious note, it seems that most of the early studies on endurance...

    Do Bears Dance?

I had a similar experience a few years back in western PA - only the bear actually put his paw through the screen window before I had a chance to pull the frame down. I was baking brownies at the time, and I would like to think it was the irresistable smell of my superior cooking that lured the...

Carter Dome and Mt. Hight loop, Sunday 5/22/2011

Date: Sunday May 22, 2011 Trails: Nineteen Mile Brook, Carter Moriah, Mt. Hight detour, Carter Dome, and back on Nineteen Mile Brook. Conditions: Trails were very wet (surprise, surprise) with little rivulets running down many segments; but because it is mostly rock and sand underfoot, the...

    Peregrines in Providence

Cool! Thanks for sharing. My Dad used to work in that building back in the early '70s, when Providence was a pretty scruffy city and peregrines weren't doing so great themselves. Both have had a rennaissance. Posthumous thanks to Rachel Carson for bringing us back the peregrines!

Pretty, Easy Hikes in the Upper Valley NH/VT

A couple of other easy hikes in the Upper Valley are: Black Mountain or Blueberry Mountain in Haverhill. Both have westerly approaches off Lime Kiln Road, and both are in the Appalachian Mountain Club White Mountain guidebook. If you do Black Mountain from Lime Kiln Road, be sure to take the...

Holt's Ledge Trail, Lyme, NH May 18, 2011. From a hike up the Holt's Ledge Trail (part of the Appalachian Trail) in Lyme, New Hampshire. Kidney-leaved Violet, maybe by Elizabeth W.K., on Flickr I think this white violet (growing right in the trail) is a Kidney-leaved Violet. Painted...

Pretty, Easy Hikes in the Upper Valley NH/VT

I tried to respond to this message before your weekend, and my computer was not cooperating. So this late reply may help for another trip: Local favorites are Holt's Ledge and Lambert Ridge - both on the Appalachian Trail in Lyme. Mt. Cube or Sunday Mountain in Orford. Gile Mountain in...

    Swimming in the White Mountains?

Whiteface Brook, along the Signal Ridge Trail, has some nice places for a dip. On a very hot day hiking Carrigain last summer the brook provided an extremely welcome cooldown before the drive home.

    2011 spring wildflower thread

I've seen humungous patches of the large white trillium in Upstate NY as well. I guess New Yorkers just do everything in a big way. :p I remember lots of trout lilies from hiking Cube a few years ago. The soils may be similar to Cardigans? From today (May 9, 2011) in Lyme, NH, I got this...

I've got a bunch of new ones from Norwich, Vermont 5/6/2011. These few are ones I could not identify. Would be very appreciative of any assistance. White Trillium by Elizabeth W.K., on Flickr I think this is the large-flowered trillium, although the flower was not especially large or showy...

Biggest D'oh "That Was Stupid" Moment

Actually quite apt. Mr. Smarts, after whom the mountain is named, was somewhat lacking in what his name implies. He was a trapper in the region in the 1700s. Stupidly and underhandedly, he stole pelts from the local Native Americans' traps. They expressed their displeasure by cutting a hole...
