    Macro photography on a budget

I am tempted to buy this little point-and-shoot lens extender for my Canon Powershot G11: http://littlebigshot.blogspot.com/ Anyone ever try anything like this?

is it too early to start a "snow-free trails" thread?

If you are in the Upper Valley region, try the Cross Rivendell Trail. The peaks it goes over are small; but with some nice views. There are a number of options. The website has helpful maps: http://www.crossrivendelltrail.org/ I hiked Sunday Mountain on Sat. 4/30 and it was both free of snow...

    Biggest Nature Surprise

Blackstone River Blackstone River in northern Rhode Island. The river is in a densely-populated part of the state. You drive through a pretty depressed urban area to get the put-in site for your canoe/kayak. However, once on the river it is really lovely. Not totally pristine nature; but...

Jason, On Smarts I only hiked as far as Lambert Ridge, and there were no trail issues of note. I threw a few small blowdowns off the trail. BTW, I've been following the Spring Wildflowers thread, as I see you have been. I have only seen one lone colts foot flower so far; but am going to keep...

    Interesting names of trails

There is a good reason that only a second-rate ski trail is named after Nanamocomuck. He was a somewhat hapless member of a family of noted Pennacooks. Oldest son of the sachem, Passaconaway, Nanamocomuck ended up in debtors' prison in Boston, and had to be bailed out by his younger brother...

    Trail Tools

I adore my Fiskar "Power Gear" Loppers. They are super light-weight and cut through branches and stems of up to 2" like a hot knife through butter. (Advertized as cutting up to 1.5" diameter; but I have found they will work on slightly bigger stuff.) Well worth paying a bit extra for; but you...

    Helping the New Hiker

Agreed. One mistake that it seems like almost every newbie hiker makes is to "tough it out" when they start developing "hot spots" on their feet. Often the new hiker is anxious not to appear to be a wimp and/or doesn't want to hold up the group by stopping. However, if you stop as soon as you...

    Helping the New Hiker

Hey, that's my motto! Actually you can learn a lot from others' mistakes; but you usually have to make a few of your own before it sinks in. My main recommendation is: Take the scenic detours. Make time to visit "the Gorge" off the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail, "Shining Rock Cliff" from Falling...

    Lambert Ridge (Smarts) 4/7/2011

Took the dogs up to Lambert Ridge (about 0.8 miles one way, on the trail up Smarts Mtn. in Lyme) after work. On this southfacing slope there was a mix of about half snow, half bare ground. Nice to hike something bareboot-able for a change. The parking lot on Dorchester Road is half flooded...

    Helping the New Hiker

If you take the above advice, be sure you have a dog with you with a good sense of direction. Better yet, two dogs - a dark one who shows up against the snow in winter and a light-colored one for summer.

Advice sought on Isolation with bushwhacks

Thanks for all of the responses. Using the file sent to me by Tim, I threw together this little map to take with me. It loses a bit of clarity in being converted to jpeg, and I reduced the sized to fit it here (find a larger size by clicking on it and going to the Flickr link). Isolation...

    Fill in your divots!

Wow, I sure opened up a can of worms here. Didn't really mean to make such a big deal out of it. The reason I used the expression "fill in your divots" is in reference to the nearly-universally accepted practice among golfers to always repair their gouges in the terrain. I am not a...
