Transitioning Back to Work after a Thru-Hike

I thru-hiked, and yes, I found it hard to come back ... and 20+ years later I think I probably have a harder time accepting the quotidian grind than I might, had I never gone ... but that's no reason not to do it. I'd rather know what I'm missing. Also, like some above have suggested, having...

    Ski approach to Signal Ridge?

Fun to hear all the stories here. My daughter and I are hoping to finish our 48 on Carrigain before winter is out. If we do skis at all, I'll be on some fairly burly metal edged bc touring skis (87/70/78), but she's on conventional skinny touring gear, so consider that the limiting factor...

Trail condition predictions for Isolation this coming friday (2/22/13) or weekend

For what it's worth, I'm likely to be heading in there with my contingent (family of four) on Monday, hoping also for some weekend traffic.

    Ski approach to Signal Ridge?

Hi -- so, assuming decent cover, is it reasonable to suppose that a couple of competent but not brillliant nordic skiers on ordinary touring gear could make it in past the end of the Sawyer River Rd. to the where the climb actually starts (~1.7 mile in)? We'd love to do half of the 14 miles on...

    When gear goes bad...

Zip ties, sewing stuff, duct tape, hose clamps, sheet aluminum, p-cord. Stuff happens & you deal. I could fill a page with lists of what has failed, and when, and where, and how we coped. Those MSR lightnings are a time bomb, though. Mine have failed twice. I still hike in them -- they're...

    Little kid sleeping bag

I had the same problem ... we just went with a couple of five-footers from TNF -- one's a "tigger" and the other a "blue ridge," and they're nearly identical. They were pretty big when they were 3 and 4 years old, but they're about perfect now (7 and 9) and they'll probably be OK for a few more...

Haul a Pulk Up Rocky Branch Tr. ?

Thanks for all the input. If it were just me, I probably wouldn't bother (then again, if it were just me, I probably wouldn't spend the night in there either) but it will be a party of four hikers, two of whom are kids. Strong kids, but kids -- so, there will be just a bit more gear per person...

Haul a Pulk Up Rocky Branch Tr. ?

Hi -- Just thinking about ways to do Isolation later on this winter ... I know SOP is pretty much to daytrip in & out, but I was wondering about hauling a pulk in, doing the Engine Hill bushwhack and setting up camp somewhere in the back of the valley to make an overnight of it. With the...

Versa Capital - new owners of EMS lays off 110, restructure company

There's that, and people around these parts truly value independent, locally owned businesses and recognize the OGE as such, and the OGE has a better consignment situation than any store I've ever encountered. Also, the OGE staff seems to know their activities and their gear better on average...

    Hunger via Waterbury Trail 1/26/13

Hard packed track & ice, with a few old postholes. We used microspikes from car to summit & back today. Not much need for snowshoes right now, nor enough cover to use them without damage. Light traction important currently -- plenty of ice flows on the trail, and more to come with this week's...

What have you done in the mountains that could have resulted in a rescue, but didn't?

I came a hair's breadth from poking my eye right out on a branch coming down off Seymour in the ADK's two winters ago. I thought I'd really done it at first. Though I guess I could probably have walked out even if I had. Going up the talus field beneath the glacier on the approach to the east...

Best trail for Moriah on Sat (1-19-13) M-C or Stoney Brook ?

Marvin -- For what it's worth, my daughter and I will be trying Moriah via Stony Brook on Sunday too. We may or may not be joined by a few friends, but in either case we'll hope to have boots on trail by 8:00 or 8:30. We're going to try to find the bushwhack from the development that lets you...
