    What's the Ultimate Fleece Jacket?

My EMS boiled wool sweater beats any fleece I've ever owned hands down.

    portage headaches

I like portaging too. The yoke I have is contoured similar to the Superior Yoke and has a piece of ridge rest duct taped to it for padding. I guess I was hoping someone might have experienced the same headache and tingling (everyone who has carried my canoe has) and would know what part of the...

    portage headaches

No, seriously, portaging gives me a headache! First it starts in the back of my neck, a little tingling, then the back of my head starts to hurt. Is this a common problem? If it is then there must be a common remedy right? Do I need more padding on my yoke, a different yoke? My yoke was...

    canoe lessons?

I apoligize for the closed minded comments I made earlier and have since deleted. I have these two bad habits that sometimes either get me in trouble and/or make me look like a fool, 1) I think I know everything (about everything) and 2) I like to argue (and be right). So, on the debate of sit...

    Eggs, not alligator

Thanks for all the input! I'm just looking to expand my camping breakfast menu. Since I am just going on a weekend trip I'm not really worried about the eggs going bad, I'm more just curious what that timeframe would be. I'd like to take eggs on future (longer) trips as well. It's a canoe...

    Hypothermia

I tip-toed around hypothermia earlier this spring on some hikes. I wrote a trip report called "cheating hypothermia" because that's what I was doing. There were a couple of hikes where I was pretty wet and cold, hands totally numb... I was running scenarios in my head "okay, if I have to stop...

    Eggs, not alligator

I'm going camping in a week and want to take some eggs. I took some eggs last time I canoe camped with my mom and was concerned about eating them quickly so they wouldn't go bad. She says it takes a long time for them to go bad, at least a couple of days. People have been eatings eggs for...

    Hibernating

My mom lives further south here in MI, but it's still plenty cold and snowy. She used to go for a paddle every new year's day. She generally paddled a river, I think she might have gone in once. Most of the water is frozen over up here by then, so even if I wanted to... but I don't...

    Getting to know you...

Before moving to Mass. canoeing was my main focus, then it became hiking, and upon moving back to Michigan it has returned to caneoing. I currently have a 15.5 foot wooden Northland canoe (avatar) which was given to me by my father in law. He had it custum built in 73. It saw a lot of hard...

    ...when the lighting strikes...

Previously I thought I had been taught to count the seconds between thunder and the lightning, as you mention here. I recently read in a couple of reputable sources, that you actually take the number of seconds and divide by five to get the distance. Puts a new perspective on things.... SCARY...

    New to 'Yaking

I used to sell Old Town boats at the shop I worked at (Bean is not an exclusive dealer although they have "LL Bean" editions). The Loon is a good all around boat, much better than the Otter, which is more or less junk. The loon comes with adjustable foot pegs, deck rigging, a better seat and I...

    lite weights (like Hornbeck)vs kayaks

I need some memory refreshing... Hornbeck- is he the guy that paddled the 12 lb canoe (the Sairy Gamp) up the Raquette River? I read "Adirondack Passage" a while ago, but now can't remember what the original guy's name was. Anyway, is that what you're talking about? A carbon fiber version of...

wide mouth, narrow, lexan, plastic.... solar pannels?

Has anyone used one of these? I'm super intrigued, but not sure if I want to blow 25 bucks on a water bottle.

    kayak saftey gear?

Lots of paddle shops offer instruction with ACA certified instructors. The one that comes to mind is Charles River Canoe and Kayak in Boston, I know they offer courses in both canoe and kayaks. Zoar Outdoor in Western Mass. does tons of instruction as well, although mostly whitewater.

    kayak saftey gear?

Take an ACA (American Canoe Association, they do all paddlesports) course. Learn proper paddling and rescue techniques. Tie your boat on correctly and securely to your vehicle when transporting it. A whistle is required by law in many states.

    What lightweight tarp to buy?

Campmor tarps for sure! I've had a a 10x10 green one (I'm pretty sure it's standard poly coated not silicone) with ripstop and grommets for about 6 years and I love it. I think it cost about 40 bucks. It isn't the lightest, but it is light, and it's held up really well. 10x10 is large...

    Attendance plummets at Baxter...

If it makes anyone feel better, or worse  , attendance at parks (state and national) here in MI has plummeted as well, severely. It is mainly being attributed to increased user fees and gas prices.

Oh the wildness of the Whites without Huts...

The huts are kinda like the auto road, they enable people who otherwise might not be able to, to go there. They provide safe lodging, food and sanitation for folks who may not be capable of it on their own. It is, after all, a national forest, who's agency mission reads "caring for the land...

    Sleeping pads

Personally, I'd stay away from the down. I always blow some more into my thermarest for added firmness, which adds moisture. I've actually had it freeze closed, and was then forced to inflate the thing manually, and slowly. I too am a fan of the two pad combo, and I like my closed cell foam...
