Senator Jeb Bradley Bags Way More Peaks Than You Do

Actually he doesn't. :D Cute article though.

    Free to a good home

I am cleaning house and looking to clear a bookshelf of ~25 years of Appalachian Trailway News magazines, 1989-2014. They are thin, amounting to about 18" of shelf space. Would like to find them a home as opposed to carting them off to the recycling center. :) Also, if there are any Nevada...

Mt Guyot - final Winter Trailwright Peak :)

Congratulations Fred! You have been working toward this goal for awhile. Mt. Guyot's "counting" is one of the reasons I love the Trailwright's 4k list. :)

    Guyot Campsite

A few years ago a couple friends and I stayed there one night in February. This was during a "normal" winter, and we were amazed - and thankful! - that the spring was flowing. We had fun the next morning sharing our breakfast with gray jays, who flew right into the shelter!

    Eagle Cliff 1/18/16

When I climbed it many (15?) years ago, there was a herd path. Your account makes for much better reading though. :D Really neat mountain, eh?

    Cannonballs?

The parking lot was not plowed out after Tuesday night's storm, BUT the western (Franconia) side of the ridge received barely an inch of snow down low. Keep in mind that IS supposed to snow tomorrow, however. IMO full crampons or Hillsound Pros are not overkill on the steep pitches right now...

    Parking on the Kanc

My thoughts: Greeley Ponds (Osceola) trailhead is woefully inadequate in size. I, too, do not "get" what gets plowed and what doesn't. For example, Oliverian Brook trailhead--advertised as having a SKI loop--was not plowed out this past weekend. I always have a shovel in my car during snow...

    Hale/Zealand/West Bond/Bond/Bondcliff; 1/01/04

Wow, how did you pull THAT up?! Since we did that particular day in the context of this http://home.earthlink.net/~ellozy/winter-record.html our choice of direction, IIRC, had more to do with where we were starting the following day. Unless you are doing the Bonds as an out-n-back from Lincoln...

    Mt Mansfield Hut Burns

Sad. That's why the GMC removed all the wood stoves from the enclosed LT shelters that had 'em. (Note that the Stone Hut was not on the Long Trail.). More info about the hut: http://www.vtstateparks.com/htm/stonehut.htm

So what are your early winter "bonus" hikes ?

In the words of the first to accomplish, in 1960, the game of climbing the NH 4000 footers in winter: Give me the Hills, by Miriam Underhill, a fascinating read with one chapter devoted to the 4000 footers in winter. In it the author details some of their more memorable outings. The multiday...

Killington via the Bucklin Trail in winter

Exposed just at the very top! Bucklin Trail is completely in the trees. From Cooper Lodge on the AT/LT, it's a steep 0.3 mile to the summit, with just the last bit exposed.

Killington via the Bucklin Trail in winter

Yes, it is plowed in winter. Bucklin Trailhead is also a Catamount Trail access point and was in good shape when I skied the CT last winter.

    Hiker Rescue in the Pemi

What I should have mentioned in my previous post is the fact that I am not the kind of person who makes it a habit of "preaching" to people I meet on the trail. It just seems condescending and patronizing, and I rarely say anything unless I feel really uneasy about a situation. This was a...

    Hiker Rescue in the Pemi

Glad he is okay! We did Owls Head on Monday, the 21st, and met this fellow on our way out, at the Liberty Brook crossing. He was pleasant and friendly and said his plan was to set up camp and climb Owls Head the next day. He asked if we had done the big river crossings (coming in via...

    Chemical Hand Warmers

Chemical hand warmers are for warming one's hands. :D They are indispensable for those of us with Raynaud's, after we have tried all manner of mitten-glove combos. They WERE indispensable on a Denali trip and for skiing Vermont's Catamount Trail during last year's very cold conditions...

    GPS app for iPhone

I use iHike GPS and love it. Every USGS map, some Canada topos, AND USFS topo maps... all for a one-time charge of ~7-8 bucks (think mine was $6.99 3-4 years ago. Regularly, though not annoyingly, updated.

LOST HIKER IN Spaulding mountain area maine.

Well, I certainly make no claims but am left with the same questions as Ellen and others. I guess the biggest question I have is why she was found so far off the AT. Speaking from my own experience, AT thru-hikers rarely stray from the white blazes, even for relatively short side trails to...
