    The Dyatlov Pass Incident

Bringing the thread drift full circle back to enduring mysterious mountain deaths ... http://www.benningtontriangle.com Dunh, dunh, dunh!!!

    The Dyatlov Pass Incident

^^^^ I watched a short video yesterday advancing this theory. But what I have a tough time with there is that it seems somewhat unconceivable to me that 9 experienced hikers going for Level 3 Soviet certification (whatever that means LOL) would all be dead within 8 hours of the incident as a...

    The Dyatlov Pass Incident

I read Dead Mountain a few years ago. 2016, I think ... still on my bookshelf. I walked away from it with the feeling that the deaths were the result of Soviet military testing of some variety. In my mind, it was the only explanation that really fit all the facts. Couldn’t get away from the...

    Hudson Highlands Hiking

Did a version of this hike today ... although I didn’t go all the way over to Timp Torne. As good as advertised! Thanks for the tip. :) https://twitter.com/Catamount05/status/1178750645576359936?s=20

    A strange "hiking" partner

The OP was clearly both anti-chunky and anti-K-Mart (where I once worked in my younger years). Must do better.

ADK 46 completed by 4-year old

^^^^ The Esper clan immediately comes to mind. Don’t know if you’re familiar with them but they were pretty controversial for awhile during my early hiking years. Parents and kids were out there all the time, setting Adirondack young age records and attacking the Northeast 111 in winter...

ADK 46 completed by 4-year old

Yeah, well my 10-year-old hiked to the top of Hunter Mountain with me a few weeks ago. So take THAT, overachieving 4-year-old! ;) :D Hunter Mountain Seriously though ... cool deal. Congrats to both Mom and Dad as well as the girl. Even if she eventually forgets many of the moments, she’ll...

New AMC Logo....a good or bad?

I really like it. The AMC jumped right out at me and the inverted Vs look like stacked mountains in the shape of a person with the bottom one looking like a snow-capped peak. Cool on multiple levels. Reminds me a little of the traditional Adirondack Mountain Club patch. ADK Patch

    Northeast’s Fastest Known Times

And it appears Ryan Atkins has eclipsed the Adirondack 46 Supported Record. 3 days, 5 hours and 52 minutes. Record-breaking kind of summer. New Adirondack 46 Supported FKT

    Hudson Highlands Hiking

Thanks for checking it out, Daniel. Did indeed take the more popular routes to these summits while also keeping an eye on upping total elevation gain as I got closer to my western trip. Lots of good suggestions in your post for some future hikes down that way! :)

    Traditional maps/guidebooks obsolete?

Lots of interesting comments and without getting into details I will say that I’m mostly a hybrid edition of old-school map/guidebook/compass navigation and new-school internet research. But as to the core question of whether the old way of doing things will eventually become obsolete, I think...

    Northeast’s Fastest Known Times

^^^^^ Interesting. Quite a bit of media coverage meanwhile on the new unsupported Adirondack 46 record. Seems pretty solid. Two Hikers Set New Record for Climbing High Peaks

    Hiking by App

Indeed. And we were all probably some of the earliest users of technology in our hiking/climbing travels. I bet almost all of us “old timers” have used this or similar sites to check on trail conditions before heading out ... especially in winter. Who amongst us has not waited for some...

    Panther 7/6/2019

Congrats and welcome to the list of finishers! Cool report. Panther sign was definitely there two summers ago when I hiked it from the Canadian side. :o Didn’t look brand new at the time but I was still surprised since I’d never seen it referred to as Panther before. Here’s what the sign...

    Hudson Highlands Hiking

Naw. I was on the move and was just as happy to keep on moving. LOL. Definitely not that big though. Cool pic. Will definitely keep this line of discussion in mind for the next time I’m hiking down there.

    Hudson Highlands Hiking

Thanks, Peakbagr. And I have always appreciated your interest and comments. :) Almost stepped on a snake on one of the latter hikes in the report. Anthony’s Nose, I think. Just a little guy but it did get me thinking that it is probably a pretty active area for snakes once you get into the...

Is greeting other folks on trail with "Hi!" part of hiking etiquette?

I have generally found that the friendliness/perceived friendliness of other hikers is directly proportional to both how deep you are in the backcountry and how busy the trail is. Generally speaking, if I’m way back there (say 6 or 8 miles in) and haven’t seen anyone for hours or all day, not...
