    Advice for Zion/Bryce/Arches/Moab Quick Trip

SLC to Moab is about 4 hours, LV to Zion is about 2.5. The Zion Lodge is inside Zion National Park and well located for hiking. The Bryce Canyon Lodge in Bryce may or may not be open, the summer season starts in late March. There's no lodging or dining options inside Arches or Canyonlands...

    Fire Warden Trail to Hale

And this is why we can't have nice things.

Does long-term hiking have to involve a list?

Nope, haven't cared about lists since I finished my 67 many years ago. At this point, lists hold no appeal to me even though I'm pretty close to finishing a few lists. I'm out of that phase of my life.

    Snow Crystal Card

Unfortunately, a little bit of information about avy danger is not always a good thing. You may make an assessment of low risk based on incomplete or erroneous information. In the east, avy terrain is pretty well identified so simply staying out of it is easy enough to do.

Ayers Rock (Uluru) to close to hikers

Hikers have been strongly discouraged from Uluru for years now, as it's considered a sacred site to the Aboriginals. While it's still technically allowed, very few still climb it.

Cog looking at running snow cats to the summit

https://www.upi.com/Archives/1988/03/10/Little-train-that-cant-says-it-will/4966573973200/ The article doesn't specify the methods, but the FS were pretty clear that they would have people up there to intercept anyone who came up on the train (or via chopper) and attempted to ski over to...

    camping spot near Zealand Hut

Keep in mind that posting stuff like this has led to the FS closing down sites for revegitation in the past. I'm sure they're already aware of the sites but they tend to frown on too much attention being directed to them.

Cog looking at running snow cats to the summit

Been tried and shot down by the FS when the Cog wanted to run ski trains. They were willing to enforce the idea that you can only ski back down the Cog tracks if you go up via Cog. I don't think going up in a cat is going to change that. It may impact the folks who use the skin track alongside...

    Moosilauke Ravine Lodge

    Interesting, but IMO not relevant.

    Moosilauke Ravine Lodge

That was the original design demo, not the actual plans of the lodge that has been built. The new lodge looks wonderful, it's opening up in October.

15-Month Old Out to Set the AT Record

Moderator Note: I can't believe I have to remind folks to dial it back in a thread about hiking with babies, but here we are. If you can't reply in a civil manner, step outside and enjoy the weather.

    Good hiking camera

Pretty much any camera on the market today, and a large number of cell phones, can do this. SLR stands for Single Lens Reflex, and is nearly always a big camera with interchangeable lenses. You don't want one of these apparently. What you are looking for is a compact P&S (Point and Shoot)...

Questions about hiking Jefferson and Adams

The Link south of Castle Ravine and the Parapet trail on Madison are the two trails I never recommend to anyone. The Cornice (between Edmands Col and Caps) isn't nearly as bad, but it's still pretty tiring at the end of a long day.

Questions about hiking Jefferson and Adams

From comments on FB groups - several folks have reported this by contacting NHDOT directly. I haven't seen it posted officially online, just these mentions on FB.

Questions about hiking Jefferson and Adams

    1) Jefferson Notch road isn't open yet, but when it is open it's driveable in any passenger car. Check with NHDOT on the opening date, they're doing work up there and it might not open until July. 2) The Cornice trail is moderately awful. In the long run it's probably a bit easier than hiking...

Disgraceful trails - Letter to the Editor

Is there any indication that she actually wrote the letter? Someone could easily sign her name to a letter as a joke or annoyance. I'm still on the side of "it's a joke/hoax".

    Moosilauke Trailhead Info

There is a temporary parking area about .8 miles from the "normal" trailhead parking along the access road. That will remain in use until the new Lodge reopens sometime (hopefully) in late Fall 2017.
