Comparison of indoor vs outdoor temperatures of huts in the winter

OK, so it will be cold in the bunkrooms, and maybe warm in the main hut. How about food storage? Where do I store my food? Is there a mouse-proof cabinet like the ADK has in their cabins, or do I need to bring a canister or Ursack to keep the mice out of my food? Thanks for all the good info...

Comparison of indoor vs outdoor temperatures of huts in the winter

Good thread; thanks for the useful info. I'm very experienced in winter hiking and winter camping in New York, but I'll be doing my first hut trip next week and had been wondering what sleeping bag to bring. The AMC website is lacking info in some important areas... Where do we get drinking...

    Whites - Lonesome Lake

Just looked into the cancellation policy. AMC keeps ALL your money if you cancel less than 14 days prior to a trip. Looks like we'll be freezing our assets off in a hut for 3 nights.

    Whites - Lonesome Lake

Sounds like there isn't much chance of drying out wet clothes:confused:. We booked 3 nights at the hut. With no, or little heat, it could be a very long 3 days up there. I'm thinking my friend should have booked a motel, and we could do day hikes anywhere.

    Whites - Lonesome Lake

Thanks to all for the info. Regarding the hut, I haven't read much about it. The bunk houses are separate buildings from the kitchen/dining area? Is there a kitchen/dining area? Are all buildings heated? Do I need to bring my own stove, and where do I set it up? There is very little info about...

Thank you! That's what I was looking for.

    Whites - Lonesome Lake

Not quite what I meant. Really don't want to see lots of skiers; maybe my friend picked the wrong hut, but that's the only one that was available for us. I'm interested in good mountain scenery and some challenging snowshoeing, and don't care about bagging the max number of peaks.

    Whites - Lonesome Lake

Making the very long drive to NH on Jan. 15 to spend 3 nights at the Lonesome Lake AMC hut. Don't really know anything about the Whites except what I read in the hut guidebook. Am open to suggestions for day hikes we can do from the hut on Sat. and Sun.. Anyone else going to be near the hut that...

    Georgian Bay

No luck here, but I found some good info about Georgian Bay kayaking on Paddling.net from a Chicago area paddler who posts to a blog on a site called CASKA (Chicago Area Sea Kayakers Assn.). If you're into kayaking big water, you've got to paddle on Georgian Bay!

    Georgian Bay

I've kayaked in the Tobermory area twice now, including a day trip around Flowerpot and Cove Islands. Now, I'm inspired to do the crossing from Tobermory to Manitoulin in summer '10 (ride the ferry back)- has anyone here done that trip? This will likely lead to a 2011 kayak trip with the shores...

    Avalanche Lake/Sewards Gate?

Av Lake certainly has ice on it, but personally, I don't even think about walking on it until well into January, and that also depends on the weather leading up to it.

    ADK Lake George

Missed it by "that" much.... I'll probably be driving up early Saturday morning, and might have to drive home again after the meeting (only 5 hours...).

I'm going to be in Lake George for the ADK BoD meeting Saturday - will anyone here be at that meeting?

    "On a warm November night..."

Sardog1 - sorry to torture you so (but I liked it!). IndianChris - Thanks, with the mild temps, there might still be some paddling possibilities up there. I have paddled on Middle and Lower Saranac in late April, but the lakes were already open. I did go up mid-April once, and all the lakes &...

    "On a warm November night..."

Part 2 When we woke up Saturday morning, it was a beautiful day - warm (for November), cloudy, but no rain. We boiled water and had our breakfast - Manon made “Cowboy coffee”. A power boat sped past and went between the colored navigation buoys and into the river. Just as we were gathering our...

On a warm November night, would you offer your ear to the loon….? Saranac “Ice-In” Paddle Trip Nov. 13-15, 2009 an Adirondack Mountain Club outing Way back in “Ought-seven”, I paddled onto the Adirondack’s Middle Saranac Lake in mid-November and camped for 2 nights. That year, it was very...
