Bartlett's Carry: Upper to Middle Saranac

The Saranac River between Mid & Lower winds through a marsh, and varies from maybe 10 to 20-feet wide and shallow above the lock, to a much wider deeper channel below. In April, you'll be able to operate the lock yourself. Let me know when you have a date set, since I'm invited to paddle in PA...

Bartlett's Carry: Upper to Middle Saranac

I have canoes and kayaks- each has its place. If you have a canoe that you can simply sit in (vs. kneel), it's vastly superior to a kayak for purposes of carrying gear and portaging between bodies of water. I used my sea kayak on the 77-mile Old Forge to Saranac route last year. It was OK for...

    pictures of paddling campsite privies?

Why plastic barrels? Plastic is not compatible with a wilderness setting, regardless of the color. The wooden box privies in the Adirondacks and Algonquin Prov. Park are actually nice-looking, blend well with a wooded setting, are very functional, and serve the purpose very well. Of course, they...

Bartlett's Carry: Upper to Middle Saranac

Maybe when I buy my lightweight solo canoe. Did that route last May, but took 4 days.

Bartlett's Carry: Upper to Middle Saranac

The Indian Carry canoe portage trail goes from Rt. 3 to Upper Saranac Lake on "OLD DOCK RD."!

Bartlett's Carry: Upper to Middle Saranac

Good point. You want the narrow dirt lane with the DEC sign that says "Indian Carry". The actual road near there called "Indian Carry Road" that is sort of opposite Coreys Road is private, and does not go where you want to be. PS: I have a photo of that, and will look for it.

Bartlett's Carry: Upper to Middle Saranac

Yes, I just paddled that section last May. If traveling North from Stony Creek Ponds, Indian Carry begins as a footpath by an old sign on the shore of the northernmost pond and passes through a beautiful forest. The point where the carry trail meets Route 3 is labeled with a good, larger sign at...

    Thank you for that insight.

Bartlett's Carry: Upper to Middle Saranac

Indian Carry (edit - see post #13) follows a narrow public access dirt road to Upper Saranac Lake, whereas Bartlett Carry Road is a private road with no public access. The entire path of Bartlett Carry from Upper Saranac to the Mid-Saranac inlet is an easemant over private land, so you do have...

Hiker survives two nights solo in woods and Trap Dike rescue

One of the reasons hard-shell boots are used in mountaineering is so the boot itsself does not absorb water, and the wet removeable liner can more easily be dried..... right?

DEC to close Ray Brook Dispatch (in the ADKs)

The article that I read indicated that most of the dispatchers declined to move to Albany, and I can't blame them for preferring the Adirondacks to a place like Albany.

    Avalanche Lake

The rangers will never say the ice is safe - the standard recommendation is to stay off the ice. I advise that you just go and if there are no footprints there, use the trail.

How much snow in the high peaks?

That's good news. And Lake Placid's pushing to keep the Winter Empire State Games alive is GREAT news!

    Gentlemen thieves?

If scrap dealers were arrested and charged as accessories to the theft, there would be less thefts of cat converters, manhole covers, and grave markers.

    Editor sued in paddling dispute

I expected this. It's going to be interesting, and should provide a resolution to the contested waters - at least for Shingle Shanty Brook.

How much snow in the high peaks?

That holds for the Santanoni range, as well.
