    Ranger report 6/1/10

Thanks, Phil, those reports always make for an educational read. Glad that there were no serious injuries, and that the Adirondack wildfires are under control.

US/Canada Border Question for Boundary Peak

That's the official response, but if you have your birth certificate and valid driver's license/photo ID, they won't make you stay in Canada, it'll just take a bit longer to clear Customs. I certainly recommend that you obtain one of the approved ID types as listed above.

US/Canada Border Question for Boundary Peak

You don't need a Passport to cross the border, but to avoid delays at Customs, you should have either a Passport, a Passport Card, Enhanced Driver's License (available in most border states), or a NEXUS card. Without those, you should still be able to return with an original copy(embossed) of...

Woman flown off Denali after refusing to climb any farther

"Luca-Mrden has been unofficially 86'd from Denali" - she should be banned for any further climbing anywhere. Period.

    Jay, You're such a hiker - it's half of a CANOE!

Both holds were full of gear, so I carried the cart on the aft deck.

    Northern Forest Canoe Trail

I just did the first 80 miles of the NFCT last weekend with my touring kayak. I'll write a TR and post it soon.

    Paddling clothing/gear

In warm weather and warm water, hiking clothes will work fine, but paddling clothes tend to be a tighter fit for freedom of movement while paddling. When the water is cold, some neoprene apparel is recommended to help retain your body's core temperature in case of an accidental capsize and...

    6'5"

I'm also a 36-inch waist, and have no problem slipping into or out of a keyhole cockpit. In my opinion, 60 lbs. is not particularly heavy for a long touring kayak. My 17-foot FG boat is 50+lbs. and quite manageable, and I'm picking up a 62lb. plastic kayak next weekend for use on Georgian Bay.

    Paddle Gatheringin the ADK?

The bugs will be doing just fine in July, but mostly only mosquitoes. Plenty of water - no problem there. Power boats all over Square Pond (Fish Creek Pond Campground), but not so bad on Upper Saranac Lake just because it's so big that there's plenty of room for everyone, and USL is a great lake...

DEC plans to remove two fire towers.

To all those who lobbied to save these 2 towers - Once the official decision is made to not remove the towers, it will be time to step forward to donate money and labor toward the restorations.

    Paddle Gatheringin the ADK?

Henderson Lake is nice, but you can paddle the full length of it in less than 30 minutes. Lots of great paddling in the Adirondacks; I'll be doing an Old Forge to Lower Saranac trip in May, and some paddling on Lake George in June. Rollins Pond is a good place for a group paddling camp - Fish...

U.S. Army proposes helicopter training on Whiteface Mountain

What issue? All I see are light-hearted comments about the exercises, and not a word against it.

Thanks for the reminder; I usually get caught by something each April 1st... :D

U.S. Army proposes helicopter training on Whiteface Mountain

If the training is restricted to certain weekdays, there should be little conflict with hikers who want to go up there. We'll see.

    Winter Hiking

There is still snow and ice in the parking lot. Snow depth on the VH trail varies from a few inches to a couple feet. The trail is very hard-packed and icy in places. Snowshoes or skis are still required, but many hikers are going without, as usual. VH trail before Marcy Dam Dam Ice jam

    Are we there yet?

As of today: Small lakes still seem to be frozen hard. Larger lakes vary - The Pond at Old Forge - mostly open Browns Tract Inlet- flowing high (Raquette Lake frozen) Blue Mountain Lake - FROZEN hard Buttermilk Falls (Raquette River) - IMPRESSIVE VOLUME! Long Lake N of the bridge - partially...
