Garmin changes inReach plans and fees

My wife doesn't know that I still hike solo on some of my ventures, but they are just small mountains. I text my buddy, so he knows where to tell rescuers to look for me if I don't return. I am decidedly low-tech but carry a map and compass. I usually know where I am. More or less. Grinning...

    (Another) New AMC Logo!

No, I meant the other one, but the one above is a close second. I was talking about the image not the font, but I see your point now that I look closer. I just like the image better on the more recent one. For the record, I have no stake or strong opinion on the merits or deficiencies of the...

    (Another) New AMC Logo!

Well said Day Trip. The best of the logos is the one they ditched for the stupid stick figure. Simple and timeless, green and white.

    (Another) New AMC Logo!

Well, at least there seems to be broad agreement that the demise of Stick Man is a welcome change. I thought it was a joke when I first saw it. Interesting point about the lack of female voices on VFTT. Where have all the women gone? I know Wards Girl still posts here. Nordic Gal? Gender is not...

LOL, that's why they created Ibuprofen.

    Semi-Pemi with Owl's Head and the Bonds - September 21, 2024

Real nice video and background music, and what a perfect day. Thanks for posting that and taking me back to Bondcliff, possibly my favorite spot in all the Whites. It's great your knee is healed, and you can once again set a mean pace on 32-mile walk/run. A very impressive feat.

    Bad One on Madison

Whenever I think of Madison, I can't help remembering MacDonald Barr who died there close to the summit in a freakish snowstorm in late August of 1986. I remember it so well because a friend and I were camped at The Perch the night before, having summited Jefferson and heading for Adams and...

    Bad One on Madison

I didn't go all the way to the summit of Madison on that hike. My destination was the 4th Howk and it's a neat viewpoint. There's a pretty big dip after that before the trail starts the final climb to the summit of Madison and there's still about 1000 feet of elevation gain from the 4th Howk to...

    Bad One on Madison

Howker Ridge is a very interesting approach to Madison if you don't mind all the ups and downs. Early on, the Bear Pit (corrected from Trap) is a unique formation. I believe the 4th Howk is about the same height as Pierce. A less traveled approach.

    Clingmans Dome is now Kuwohi

Do you really think the concept of presentism applies to slavery? I can see other issues where it might apply but slavery seems a stretch. It is not just in retrospect that we now, in the 21st C, realize that slavery was wrong. Slaveholders knew it was wrong, but it was a source of great wealth...

    Clingmans Dome is now Kuwohi

    For the Confederacy.

    Thanks. Corrected.

    Clingmans Dome is now Kuwohi

The concrete structure on top of what is now called Kuwohi is an abomination intended for tourists. You can do a relatively easy 3.6 mile round trip hike from that summit area to Andrews Bald which is a nice open viewpoint and much less crowded than the former Dome. I think the Flame Azaleas...

Co-workers leave Colorado man behind on mountain summit during office retreat

That actually happened to me back in the 80s. I had never heard of the exercise before and I was dubious, but I went along with it. They dropped me. I failed to appreciate the point.

Co-workers leave Colorado man behind on mountain summit during office retreat

A prophetic tale and an appropriate allegory.

    Annual Visit to NH

Thanks. We were a little disappointed that we didn't get a view from Magalloway but that's the luck of the draw. I like exploring so the long ride was really a pleasure trip for me. Here's a few more pics that didn't make the first cut.

    Sad News

Thanks a lot for posting this info Dr D. I still haven't gotten used to the fact that peakbagger's informative and provocative posts are not leading the way when I open the site. I hope VFTT survives his absence because it just isn't the same without him.

    Less daylight every day now

I've usually had good luck with NH weather when visiting in mid-August over the years. For several years, I visited in September and the days were shorter and the air was cooler. The last 10 years or so, I've had hotter weather than in the past. I got seriously fried on The Baldfaces on a hot...

Mt Major - Major Trail work and limited parking for the next 12 weeks

Salty, I just picked up on your clever thread shift. Major Major from Catch 22. he was a memorable character, but Orr was my personal favorite. “Anyone who wants to get out of combat duty isn't really crazy.” There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for...

    Sad News

The report that I saw said that he rode the Cog up and decided to walk down. He did not get far. He was found on the Gulfside Trail near the Westside Trail so it would appear he was heading for Jewell which would make sense. No name pending notification of next of kin and no cause of death as...
