    Mittersill

I'm surprised you do not swear off hiking ski trails. Didn't you break your leg at Wildcat?

    Mittersill

Kind of cool to see this 5 year old thread resurrected. I gave up on this hike years ago and just crossed it off my list. Not gonna hike Loon or Wildcat either. I still have enough 52WAV peaks to go to last me a few more years, assuming I last a few more years.

Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

Though not a promoter of Clay, I was happy not to see Reagan gain acceptance. With it's bald summit, Eisenhower somehow seems appropriate. The question is why would anyone, even New Hampshire-ites, want to honor Franklin Pierce?

Looks like the anti logging crusade is coming to the Whites (again).

Peakbagger, dead trees also serve a purpose, both when standing as wildlife habitat, and when fallen by releasing nutrients back to the soil and the immature forest to which they remain a contributing part. Read The Overstory.

Looks like the anti logging crusade is coming to the Whites (again).

Thank you PB for that very even-handed history lesson with relevant detail about the Whites. Sustainable logging is probably beneficial in some ways though almost surely less profitable than the cruder methods which have led to distrust in general and to organized opposition. Peak baggers just...

    The Percy Peaks

I loved that loop and I think I recall blueberries on South Percy. Maybe a regular can confirm that. It was kind of hazy so I should probably go back and do that one on a clear day. Shay must be pretty nimble if he descended the Percy Peaks Trail the first time. I had a better view on the day I...

    Trouble on the Ridge (again).

To return to the OP, this does sound like a new variation on the unpreparedness theme. Clueless hiking with a baby. It is one thing to endanger yourself and/or other adults who have free will and ought to know better. It would appear to be on another level to subject a baby (as described, not a...

    Sunset hikes, below 4k footers??

North Moat is a great sub 4k peak and I loved that loop including Red Ridge Trail, but it might be too strenuous for the family the OP is entertaining. That's a good climb up North Moat.

    Mt. Tremont

Thanks Ken. BTW, your book is a great resource. I should add that the Mt Tremont Trail trailhead sits at 820 feet of elevation on Rt 302 and is not as low as 500 feet. My bad. I hate giving out incorrect information and I should have looked that up before posting it. It still ranks as one of the...

    Mt. Tremont

Thanks for this report. It's on my list for this summer if I make it to NH. One of the few trailed 3K or higher peaks in NH not on my resume. From what I've heard and read, not everyone likes it. Perhaps they are expecting an easier climb given the 3300 foot elevation? I think the trailhead sits...

I met a genuine dirt bag on Monday, May 8, 2023

That's a great story and well written. Thanks for posting that.

    SAR Discussion -

I think you did the best you could under the circumstances and your choices are well explained and reasonable. The only thing I would question is proceeding to the summit with him and not heading directly down once you encountered him especially given the time of day.

    The Next Big Accident Generator?

That's an interesting and revealing error by the AI. There are of course deer, bear, and moose "in the area" but the AI fails to distinguish the general area from the ridge itself. The only wildlife I recall seeing on the ridge are hawks, though small mammals would not surprise me.

Pepper--One of the greatest New England hiking dogs

Wow! 30 rounds of the 48! Holy Schnauzer! That dog belongs in the Guinness Book of World Records as well as the Hiking Hall of Fame.

    Total Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024

I read about that convergence which might be called an astronomical "Full House." I tried for a photo but only had my phone and it just did not capture the event. What enhanced the effect for us was 1. the surprise because we did not know about it or anticipate it, and 2. the manner in which...

    Total Solar Eclipse - April 8, 2024

Eclipses don't really excite me either, but one astronomical event that did catch my attention happened a couple of years ago when I was at my buddy's cabin on Streeter Pond outside of Franconia. Across the pond rose Jupiter, then Saturn, and finally the full moon in succession. They formed a...

North & South Doublehead Mts. ?

The views from South Doublehead are worth the climb. It's short and steep by either route but the payoff is as advertised. Of course, I did this neat little loop in dry summer conditions so I can't comment on what the conditions will be like now.

Car Break ins at Rocky Branch Parking on RT 16

OTOH, a few years ago I did a loop over Jefferson and Clay going up Caps Ridge and down Jewell Trail. We left KMan's vehicle at the Base Rd lot at the end of Jewell and drove my car over to Caps Ridge. Many hours later when we got to his car, he discovered that he had not only left his driver...

    Hello!

I think all of us here appreciate that the forum lives on. It's great that some new people are signing on and that's its easier for them to do so. And some old people are coming back as well.

    The Next Big Accident Generator?

Altitude sickness? Can you get altitude sickness at 4,000 feet or even at 5,000 feet? Great directions! Will followers realize they were led down the garden path when they get to Liberty? Oops.
