Can someone tell me if the trails up to the Doubleheads are closed right now due to mud season ?

It sounds like the OP is asking about North and South Doublehead in Jackson. Those trails are not closed.

The SLA closures apply to Mt. Doublehead in the Squam Range -- a completely different location.

The views from South Doublehead are worth the climb. It's short and steep by either route but the payoff is as advertised. Of course, I did this neat little loop in dry summer conditions so I can't comment on what the conditions will be like now.

Note that there is no road parking in front of the newer trail. You park in the main lot and walk on the road if you want to do a loop. Also, the newer trail is quite steep and you would want some form of traction in icy or snow conditions. I do not whether the trail still has any ice/snow on it.

The trails are open and there is a good parking lot. I would recommend going up the ski path to North, dropping down into the Col and climbing up to South, ( go past the ledge to a cairn for the true summit) then avoid descending the New path and descend back into the Col and follow the Old Path back to the parking lot. The old path is easier to descend and gets more traffic, not to mention it brings you back to your car.

I'll second the ski path ascent option. Old path is steep and very eroded, if gravity is your primary descent mechanism then you'll have no problem.

This was( is ) my plan. THANKS.
