How to strain water when filling a Platypus?

Go to an aquarium or pet store and get a small fine aquarium fish net of nylon. We use these in the winter to dip fir needles and bits of bark out of our water. place it over the platy and strain. Alternatively, a small filter funnel (Like a small yellow coleman fuel funnel) where you can stuff...

    Your road bike.

I still ride my first "real road bike that I got 23 years ago - 1987 Cilo Sport 105 with a tange 1 Chromoly frame and 105 grouping with Biopace crank (Upgraded around 1992 to the 600 BioPace Crank). My guess is that I have thousands of miles on this bike. I only ride it on flatter rides now -...

    Joshua Tree National Park?

If you like to scramble & boulder, Jumbo Rocks is a great place to hang for a day. Also, if you have a hankering to walk up a 5K mountain with nice views head up Ryan Mountain (West Coasters claim it's steep, but after the 46 it was like being on an escalator) it is about 2 hours up and 1.5...

    MacNaoughton from Upper Works

I started up that way in 1997 or 98 and worked my way up for about 30-45 minutes before I got fed up with minimal progress due to the immense blowdown across the stream and turned back. I imagine it's not that much different now... Good Luck if you go that way.

    Lehigh Gorge Whitewater

I live 1/2 mile off the lower Lehigh in Bethlehem and paddle my 17' necky kayak on that section frequently (above the Delaware confluence, before the final chain dam @ Island Park) and am pretty familiar with the lower section - wider, slower, no rapids - not so bad to handle a long boat...

    Whisperlite replacement pump?

Ditto. I have a couple of stoves that are 15to 18 years old and the old pumps both finally brok in the late 90's.. Have they changed pump designs again? The new pumps I got had the "One-piece" red pump ears.

    It's not funny

I do not know anyone specifically, but I have heard rumours of some aspiring ADK winter 46ers who would wait until a large ADK Chapter had a trip to a set of peaks and then they wouls swoop in the next day to take advantage of the ease of a broken trail to the top. I am not comfortable with...

What kind of tree is this?

Another good use: Since this is a soft "Hard" wood, they make incredible fire kindling. We had a lot of overgrowth on our old property in Honoeye Falls - I found by cutting down the 8-10' saplings (about the diameter of a big thumb) and then cutting them into 2' lengths (Like butter with a...

    Best winter Sleeping PAD?

Some confusion from my original post. I use a Full length Ridge Rest that is 3/4" thick. Not a 3/4 length ridge Rest. Originally they came in 2 thicknesses 5/8" and 3/4". I picked mine up about 15 years ago, but I don't know what they are now. Sorry for any confusion...

Boot comparable to the Montrail Moraine?

I had considered the Montrail Moraines several times over the years. I ended up with Merrell Ridgelines - I think they might have both been made by the same boot company in Italy, as they were very similiar. Anyways when I heard Merrell had stopped making them around 1997-98, decided to buy a...

    My ALMOST 46th

Wow - Nice photos!! I got stuck in what is probably the same spot one day in Early January of 94 or 95... Snowshoes and no crampons...I hit that huge, massive flow of ice (Green ice as I recall) on some long pitches and about a 1/4 way up UWJ after the col, I gave in and turned around, (I was...
