    Kayak storage

Cold won't harm the polyethelene (which I believe is a unbranded form of Duralight). Ditto on no sunlight. I hang mine upside down in the Garage, using 2 tubular webbing straps and a pulley system (one fore and one aft of the cockpit). I don't know the pros or cons of hanging them on end...

    Bug ID help

Nice Shot. Those are aphids - They can suck the juice out of plants. Ants will harvest them and keep them around as a food source. They don't eat them though. They give the aphid a gentle squeeze with their mandibles and the aphid produces a drop of honeydew, which the ants feed the queen...

    sharing camp sites

Best Line I ever heard was around 91 or 92 coming into the Seward LT on a late one very cold rainy afternoon. 2 older guys (70's) walked up behind me, upon seeing me standing in front of 3 young guys in the L/T and hearing one of the fellows in the L/T tell me "This one's Full - There's another...

    Shelter Etiquette 101

I see nothing in the poll options such as "awakening early the next morning and liberating the offending party's bootlaces."

Moose shot and killed in Worchester

Well that seals the deal for me!! I am definitely smarter than a moose because when I lived in Sterling, I always took precautions to go around Woostah rather than in Woostah.

    Question About Declination

My FOTH Book is an older version and the figures/pages don't tie out. So think of your compass dial and draw a figure with 2 points one above directly above you labeled "360" and one at 11:00 position and label is "343". Now take your compass and point it straight at the 360 spot and rotate...

    Indian pass

Must've spent an hour trying to get up that damn thing one winter back around '97. it was entirely encased in ice and I we had left our crampons and snowshoes back at the L/T and were out for a short dayhike to summit rock. I had my plastic boots and could not get a toehold - Finally gave up and...

1,742 mile NYS drive, thx bubba and teejay

Wow - Glad you liked the state CF!! So taking your idea further, maybe a bunch of us around NYS (and other states for that matter) should set up a VFTT volunteer hostel Overnighter program. To join everyone (who is interested in joining) signs up and hosts other hikers at their abode for a...

    Mont Blanc Avalanche 8-24-08

Wow, I just came back from Chamonix last week. It did rain like hell for about a day and a half and then the next morning you could see the snow blowing off Mont Blanc (It looked like snow through my wife's telephoto lense). We tried to go up Aguille Du Midi for 3 days in a row, but it was...

    Switzerland

Well, We just got back. Life is so much more complicated with an infant and a sailing 7-years old (Game boy left by dad's orders in the US), but we got to Grindalwald and walked around a bit as well as Interlaken, some sailing on the Bodensee (courtesy of wife's Cousin), stayed for 3 days in a...

    a good cup o' joe

I am not sure if this will help, as I don't use a JB, but I do use several different stoves and a key factor for me is that the water is no longer boiling, but has cooled off for a minute or two. Do you have another vessel that you could use, or do you drink straight out of the JB pot? I use...
