    It's debatable

Tim, I do seem to rmember a lot of heated 46er Listserv messages coming from JC about trying to shutdown the NLP trail run. In my mind (sometimes not the best place for ANYone to be :D ) I thought he was spearheading the movement against the NLP Trail run. Cheers Rick

    purchasing VFTT bumper sticker?

Darren, If we could do it through Paypal, it might be much easier - People can add shipping to their order and addresses could be printed out on stickers and slapped onto envelopes. (Though I am not vounteering for that part.... :D ) Here's my volunteer effort - I'd be glad to front all or...

    Replacement shockcord for tent poles

You could try JoAnn Fabrics or similiar stores - Get a length of elastic cord. Good enough 'til you can get to Campmor.

    Warmlite tents

I have had a couple of Kelty 4-season Windfoils over he last 11 years (both 2 and 3 person models). I really like the tunnel design because the pitch is much more taught and it seems to stand up to winter conditions better (depending how you pitch it - Tail into the wind for me)

    NiMH Battery Question

I read somewhere (Zbattery.com, perhaps) that if you have an inexpensive charger (I have a Walmart Energizer charger that came with some NiMH 1800's), that if I upgraded to 2700's, the charger would only charge them to a capacity consistent with 1800's. I have long since recycled the old...

    2008 Garmin Topo Mapsource

Iam thinking of upgrading. I see it is $100 at REI, plus $30 Rebate. at Amazon for 59 plus $30 rebate - Definitely sounds worth it for a net outlay of $29. DP or anyone else - Have you upgraded yet. I just looked at various areas on the garmin site through the new Topo and the old Topo and...

    Blast Furnace at Upper Works

They are resurfacing and IIRC, putting a roof on it to preserve it. I was by there at the beginning of summer and stopped to talk to the workers (Nature preservancy group or something similar. They are also restoring of the old houses. They were rebuilding the foundation when I saw them. PS...

Winter shovel, nice to have or need to have

I carry mine for group trips where we might set up base camp for a few days and do peaks. It comes in handy for the reasons others have said. I wouldn't carry it on a dayhike, preferring to leave it in Basecamp. Nor, would I carry it if I were backpacking alone in the winter.

    Transition to long distance hikes

Another tip - I have 3 screws in my left knee and it tends to swell up a bit so I take 4-6 hundred mgs of ibuprofen as a prophylaxis (prior to any swelling) to keep the swelling down. It is always best to consult your physician first, though. I also take a couple at night before I turn in -...

    Transition to long distance hikes

It is a silicon based personal lubricant. In hot weather, I sweat a lot and I get chapped/raw skin between my thighs as well as buttrash (Even though I wear spandex style mid thigh shorts to cut down the rubbing. I apply Body glide and the occurrences of these afflictions drop significantly. I...

    Transition to long distance hikes

Pack as light as possible Carry a small tube of diaper rash cream Get some Body Glide and use it several times per day start walking with a pack now to make sure everything works right (including you) Try to share as much gear as possible. Don't underestimate the power of a baby wipe on a hot...

    Bear Grylls Big Phony

I wouldn't say a big phony. Certainly he has more survival knowledge and is tougher than me. I do enjoy hhis shows and often wondered about the camera crew. Still if 90% of what he does is unaided, he is still a pretty tough dude.

Truth Time: Could you survive 24 hours?

Like Pete and DougPaul (Thogh not as severe), When I took a tumble in the Niagara Gorge and completely tore My ACL 15 years ago, I had to hike back up and out. I was in tremendous pain - I didn't think of anything but climbing back out. I then had to drive a 5 speed to the hospital (shifting...
