    Another Falling Waters Loop Fatality

Back in the day I converted his cords in these tables to UTM. Happy to provide if requested. As an FYI: He no longer uses this route. His website describes winter Presi Trav going from Greyknob to Pinkham.

Finally, an alternative to Ammo and Jewell.

    Heated Mitts / Gloves Question

I went with Volt heated mittens. She's used em once so far and loves them. Batts took a long time to fully charge and ran full bore for an hour on High w no problems. I'll post more as we use them.

    Sled/Polk Trails

I think the personal interview is no longer a requirement for Winter Baxter fun, with the possible exception of above tree line travel out of Chimney Pond. When I did the ski traverse 10 years ago we did not see a ranger until day four when we pulled into Roaring Brook, and then just in...

    Sled/Polk Trails

The "untracked" part is I think the deal breaker here in New England. Hard to find any good trails that are not tracked by some form of conveyance. Sleds are pulled extensively in Baxter Park in Winter. But terrain is mostly snow covered roads, broken out trails and the occasional untracked...

    Another Falling Waters Loop Fatality

Alas, we are not alone in the cell phone / rescue conundrum. Here's a story about the hiker cell phone problem in Old England. The Lake District SAR had over 600 callouts in 2022!

    Another Falling Waters Loop Fatality

We got some great candidates here on VFTT who could fill this role beautifly !!

    Another Falling Waters Loop Fatality

Well I feel bad for the SAR volunteers. I wonder when their altruism and willingness to go up Franconia Ridge at night, in sub-zero temps and high winds will be exhausted by the apparently unlimited number of clueless who want to do that hike or "bag" those Winter 4s. There is a limit to what...

NH Fish And Game Seeking Help With Missing Hiker

That is a hard story to read PB. But thanks.

General Mountaineering Ice Axe vs An Actual Ice Axe

Looks like above tree-line trekkers will get a chance to use crampons and ice axe this weekend. A deep thaw with rain for the summits, followed by a very quick hard freeze is forecasted. Even moderate slopes could be potentially dangerous. Do you know what to do if you find yourself on that...

Winter Solstice today - The original reason for the season

Now that is a great md-week retirement activity.

Winter Solstice today - The original reason for the season

Exactly. But the druids were not into winter peak bagging!

    Heated Mitts / Gloves Question

I'm old but not that old!! 1980 - 1989. Wasn't flux cap. Lifted pin on 555 timing IC near brain stem. All set now.

    Sort of an event, retirement

Yay for you PB. (And just in time to take over the running of this fine and classy website!) May your 401k be bountiful and health good. The world awaits! Best of all, no more weekend hiking :)

    Heated Mitts / Gloves Question

Ouch! Will look forward to your report. In meantime I ordered a pair of Volt mitts for her. We'll see how they perform. BTW: We lived at Gibbet Hill Farm in Groton from 1980 to 1889. Was a working Angus breeding farm in those days and we loved it.

What a Great pic. I wonder, could you load up the Kelly frame on 10 meters? :)

Baxter State Park looking for a new director

Indeed. I volunteered there many times in summer months and am convinced old Percivel is the only one who really wants it wild. Many guests complain about the bumpy dusty road (pave it), primitive facilities, lack of expansive trail head parking and lack of potable water from faucets. Then...

    Climber falls to death

I've started using the auto block in place of a prusick hitch. Nice cause it is bi-directional and easy to loosen and move after loading. Worth experimenting with.

    Climber falls to death

Here's a sad story of a recent rappel accident where a weathered anchor sling failed. I don't think I ever rapped off a single sling. I hated rappelling and redundancy was a must.

    RMC Cabin Fee Increase

I think a lot of White Mountain "locals" and other denizens of the North Country resent the AMC's expanded focus into Maine, NY, NJ etc. Good lord, Harriman a mere 40 miles from the Big Apple... and served by mass transit no less! Greenville Maine / AT corridor, so far away, what's the point...
