Monadnock Mt, Vermont, 11 July 2010

I had a great visit to this less famous Monadnock, and its fire tower, in northeastern Vermont on Sunday. Full trip report is here, pictures only are here. One word of caution: for those hiking with dogs or small kids, there is a great deal of broken glass under the fire tower. -vegematic

Thanks for the greenie! I get over to Evans Notch quite a lot as it's so nearby. Even so, I always seem to gravitate to the same trails. I've been trying to branch out a bit this summer.

    Mt. Cabot Cabin?

Does anyone know if it is now on reservation/fee service or if it is still informal? Also, does anyone know whether the spring is reliable lately? I know the cabin information is on the site somewhere but my search skills seem to have failed me. -vegematic

Old pictures - Can you identify locations?

nh4 looks like the entrance to Wildcat Ski area on RT 16. I believe I can make out "Wildcat" on the sign at right. nh5 I think is taken from just below Wildcat D looking NW. I think I see the auto road on Mt. Washington in the foreground. nh7 looking over the Great Gulf from Mt Washington...

I hiked this on 25 Jun from Wild River Campground up Basin Trail -> Basin-Rim Trail -> Meader Ridge Trail -> Eagle Link -> Wild River Trail -> WRCG. Wild River Questions

Not much to add except to say that I made the crossing of the Wild River two days ago just above the Spider Bridge site and it isn't too bad. I made it across dry by boulder-hopping with poles. Anyone taller and/or more graceful than me (i.e. pretty much everybody) should have no problem...

    Degenerative Disc Disease

Wow, sorry you (both of you!) have to deal with that. Nobody has told me that I have Degenerative Disk Disease in those exact words but I do have several torn and compressed discs in my L spine that "will get worse with age, not better". I am very clear to my chiropractor and primary care...

did you feel the earthquake today ?

I felt it in West Bethel. A few seconds of gentle rocking followed by a thump, kind of like the house settling (it even creaked). It wasn't really like a truck or train going by here, more of a low-frequency rolling motion. Pretty nifty. -vegematic

canadian wildfire smoke choking the whites...

I'm just a couple km from Breeze. It was indeed pretty bad in the Bethel area today. I smelled smoke all night last night. Lungs started burning once I got up and started to move around. I cancelled a bike ride I'd been planning and just puttered (very slowly) around the house and yard. I'm...
