    Sawyer River Road

I think it's a precaution. A lot of the roads are closed as of 29 October. I wonder if they'll reopen any of them for use until the snow flies?

    Suggestions for hike next weekend

Since you expressed an interest in checking out the RT 113 area I'd say you should consider the Baldface Circle trail. It's a fabulous loop. If that looks too long for you, then you could go a little more than halfway up South Baldface to a shoulder where there is a trail junction, head south on...

    Zealand via Zeacliff Trail

Piece o' cake. Thanks for the information folks, it was spot on. The trail was about as dry and ice-free as I could have hoped, especially with today's balmy temperatures. The write-up in the AMC guide had me thinking this was a dicey route but, in fact, it's just another White Mountains trail...

    Zealand via Zeacliff Trail

I'm thinking about making an ascent of the Zeacliff Trail this weekend. I've never hiked it before so I don't know how steep it is or how much winter might have encroached on it yet. Does anyone have any recent information on this trail regarding snow/ice/running water? -vegematic

    Sawyer River Road

I just hiked Carrigain for my 48/67 finish yesterday. There was one small tractor parked on the side of the road and evidence of recent work. It was an easy 30-minute walk each way to the Signal Ridge trailhead. Shouldn't be any big deal if you do end up walking it. -vegematic

Mt. Carrigain via Signal Ridge, Desolation, Carrigain Notch Trails, 22 Sep 2012

Date of Hike: 22 September 2012 Trail Conditions: Road walk was a breeze, taking only 30 minutes each way. Signal Ridge Trail in great shape with no significant obstacles. Water crossing before the Carrigain Notch junction was straightforward. Desolation Trail from the summit was wet in...

    4 Season List (Gridiot) Question

This is my reasoning as well. I would stay consistent with the rules for the winter list.

Howe (North) Peaks Trail Baxter - Reopening

This is great news. I hiked the NW Basin - North Peaks loop in the mid 90's and it was a wonderful, full day. Looks like I'll be doing it again. -vegematic

A new long one: The Gorham Loop

That'll be a three-day backpack for me. When did you hike it? -vegematic

Lower clearance car driving on road to Mt. Abraham in Kingfield Maine?

I think you'll be fine. I was up there a couple weeks ago and friends who met me made it in regular passenger cars. There were a couple deepish holes but if you take your time you should be able to drive around or straddle them. There was good parking for five cars just before the twin bridges...

Vermont native attempts record run on Long Trail

One thing that interested me about the scene at Montclair Glen...there were about 17 hikers there, mostly young men. Nobody seemed to think it was odd that a woman might break an athletic record held by a man. Actually, most of the guys thought that was pretty cool. What really astonished them...

Vermont native attempts record run on Long Trail

I was setting up camp at Montclair Glen yesterday when she passed through at around 6:30 pm. It was an aid stop for her. She seemed to be doing well and was planning to spend last night at App Gap.

Kearsarge North and Carrigain Fire Towers to Close for Repairs

Thanks for that. Carrigain's coming up soon for me and I'd hate to not have the tower open when I get there. And I second peakbagger's recommendation for Vermont Monadnock. It's a great little hike. -vegematic

Lincoln Brook Tr Past Owls Head Slide

I made that trip earlier this summer, over Memorial Day weekend. That section of trail is rough but I really liked it. I found it more attractive than the southern section of the LBT. You will probably get wet, muddy feet, and plants will touch you in the more overgrown areas. Leaving the OH...
