    Redington and Abraham (Maine) Access?

I don't know, but I await the answer as I also plan to visit those two later this summer. Will your friend be backpacking or making two separate day hikes of it?

    Dudley Trail (BSP) comparison?

My recollection of the Dudley trail, and it was some years ago, was that it is a big, blocky boulder climb. Pretty steep, but no hanging off of ledges, a sense of exposure but less so than the KE.

    Hiking is for the birds!

Which two routes did you survey? I surveyed Mt. Success on Friday morning. I heard no Bicknell's Thrushes during my survey but heard some at my campsite the night before, and one in the morning as we were starting down. I guess they were sleeping in that day.

    Long Trail winter thruhike status???

I don't know anything about a winter end-to-end, but the LT side-to-side involves hiking all the side trails to the LT. This includes the first part of the AT after the split, but not all the way to NH. Details are here: http://www.greenmountainclub.org/page.php?id=354 -vegematic

Red Rock Ridge loop, 29 April 2012

Well, it's a couple weeks out of date but it was a really excellent hike. I'm sure it's still wonderful! I hiked a loop from Stoneham, ME using the Miles Notch Trail, Red Rock Trail (to Speckled Mountain) and then the Great Brook Trail back to the beginning. Here is the link to my full post and...

    Tully Trail, MA: 05 May

Dugan posted in Trail Conditions about our Tully Trail hike. Here is a link to the pictures that I took. It's a wonderful loop with a great mix of some vistas, a variety of woods, a few open areas, good footing, not much terrible mud, some road walking, streams, waterfalls, ponds, and...

I counted up all the 0.1-mile dots on the Tully map (and they were closer together on the hills than on the flats) and our loop came out to 21.6 miles. Adding in the side trips to the views on Tully Mtn and Jacobs Hill gets us to a round 22 miles on the day. I've gone through my pictures. Should...

Red Rock Ridge and Speckled Mtn lollipop, Sunday 29 April

Thanks, chickety. I should have said descending by the Great Brook trail, not the Cold Brook trail.

Red Rock Ridge and Speckled Mtn lollipop, Sunday 29 April

It's a bit last minute, but is anyone interested? I'm looking to start walking at 8:30. I usually come in at around 2/3 - 3/4 of book time but may take this one a little slower. I'll start out up the Miles Notch trail from the south to Red Rock Ridge, on to Speckled, then descend via RRR and...

Speckled and Blueberry Mountains, 18 April 2012

Trails: Bickford Brook, Bickford Slides Loop, Blueberry Ridge Trail Conditions: All trails mostly dry. A few bits of mud here and there that were easily negotiated. A very few patches of ice up high that were inconsequential. Bickford Slides Loop was a little hard to follow in places due to...

    caribou? camping on the peak?

As far as I know it's the standard wilderness area restrictions: no motors, groups not over 10 people. You should be fine. I've never been bothered there or on Speckled Mtn when I've camped. The road should be drivable all the way to the summer parking but if not you can probably stop into...

    grafton notch loop?

I hiked the west half in 2007 with guthook. We stayed at Slide campsite which had earthen tent pads and a kitchen area but I don't remember a privy. I thought the area was really nice - no long views but really pretty woods. Water source was a small stream that crosses the trail where the...

What gear do you dream of getting, or getting rid of....

I've been drooling over them and these guys http://www.zpacks.com// for a few weeks now. I think ZPACKS tents might come in lighter and cheaper than HMG's. Which is too bad, because I really wanted to buy from the Maine folks. I may yet. It depends on what the spousal unit likes, since I'm...

Your ideal fantasy long distance trail...

I want the JMT to be in Maine. Perhaps more feasible: I'd like some 100 - 300 mile loop hikes in VT-NH-ME and into Quebec

Map that shows forested cover in the US

That's pretty cool. Any idea what the grey-outlined areas represent? Some seem to obviously correspond to tree-cover, or lack of it, but not all are so clear. -vegematic
