great little hill, thinkin of camping on top maybe wed. or thurs. night in between 2 days of snowboarding @ the riv, caribou would be via bog rd., via rt.2.. so, is this allowed? if yes, awesomeness! if no, any suggestions for shortish hike (2-5 miles one way) around sunday rivah with a bad-a$$ place to pitch a tent? my #2 choice is buck's ledge over by abrams..thanx in advance for responses!:)

As far as I know it's the standard wilderness area restrictions: no motors, groups not over 10 people. You should be fine. I've never been bothered there or on Speckled Mtn when I've camped.

The road should be drivable all the way to the summer parking but if not you can probably stop into Pooh Corner Farm during business hours and ask them about where to leave your car for the night.

Caribou is a great little mountain. Don't know if you'd call the large open ledges at the top "treeline" or not. I've camped near the top a couple of years ago. Be aware that the northern approach had numerous muddy spots last October See my trip report not sure what it would be like this spring.

I wonder, would the ski patrol bother you if you just take a last ride up either the White Heat Quad or the Barker Quad and walk the open ledges south of each (see google earth) until you find a nice spot? Just a thought.

thanx for thoughts!

just did a little internet research, appears just the 200 ft. rule is needed on caribou! looking forward to trying out my new tent this week! woot!:)

good thought about camping on/@ riv, however I'm looking for a hike and more remoteness for this particular afternoon, to recover from a day of resort riding:D now, if I can only sneak in a little a single-track mt.biking next week, for a classic Maine spring week!!:)

no bo..

tues. night took out my new ll bean microlight fs 2.. decided on a hill closer to my house, rather than caribou.. The tent held up well, temps. upper 20's, winds 30+, even some snowflakes, had to do fs mode, top soil only 1/2" no staking, the noise of the fly, (not being staked) kept me awake most of the night, but really like the design and weight, lookin forward to some treks!
