I knew meb was on the trail behind me but didn't know you were with her. I *loved* it out there, can't wait to go back, especially to bighorn plateau!

John Muir Trail, 19 July - 13 August

Well, nearly four months after summiting Mt. Whitney I have finished putting together a slideshow of our hike. Here is the link if you are looking for a way to pass half an hour. -vegematic

    Brutus – In Memoriam, 2000-2011

Very sorry to hear of your losses. I was lucky enough to be among Brutus' many admirers and well-wishers who tagged along on his Mt. Cannon finish. Ribbons were handed out to all of the extended Brutus Brigade that day and I still keep mine pinned to my pack. -vegematic

That's geeky on so many levels. Truly admirable.

    How Much Snow?

Not much more than a dusting here in Bethel. Maybe two-three inches if I measure where it "drifted". Sunday River will probably be reporting 10 inches or more. Don't believe it. -vegematic

Am I crazy? Winter overnight in the Whites

I think the Mizpah tentsite is within reach of a less experienced winter hiker. If you don't feel compelled to bag a peak then the old Perkins Notch lean-to site would be nice. I am also a fan of Unknown Pond in the winter. A nice loop is possible by heading north on the Kinsman Ridge from...

Heading Into the Woods Without a Plan (28-Oct-2011)

Nice! I love that maze of RMC trails. I always leave home with a plan but often abandon it if I drive by a trailhead that "calls out" to me. Bad solo hiker. -vegematic

    Cohos Trail Completed

I don't think the article mentions it but the CT links up with a (growing?) trail system in Quebec. It is possible to hike from Crawford Notch as far as Mont Megantic on the CT and the Sentiers Frontaliers. I'm planning to just that next summer. -vegematic

Mahoosuc area loop - Day hike or short backpack ideas?

Are you talking about the old road from Mahoosuc Notch to the Wright trailhead? Because if so it's an easy-peasy 'whack. The hardest part will be finding the road and that isn't that hard. The road is overgrown but easily followed. I've hiked officially maintained trails that are harder to...

White Mountain National Forest Open as of Tuesday 8/30/2011

As of Friday the Wild River Rd is still gated. The suspension bridge that carried hikers, snowmachines, and the Highwater Trail across the Wild River at Hastings is gone. There is now, in its place, a "natural bridge" of dozens of trees that caught in the cables and brought the bridge down...

I hope you keep that promise to yourself to finish the JMT. The first part was nice but a lot of the southern part was OMG SPECTACULAR! I want to go back and revisit some places.

John Muir Trail, 19 July - 13 August

Kevin, I'm glad the fire is on its way out. It only blew over the Trail a couple times and the smoke was really thick and nasty. I can't imagine living down wind of it. Michelle, yes, Bear Creek. It was already high from snow melt and we would have hit it right after three days of heavy rain...

John Muir Trail, 19 July - 13 August

My 19-year-old niece and I hiked the JMT and after several days of traveling home, many loads of laundry, and getting back in touch with family I am finally sitting down to wade through the 700+ pictures I took. That's going to take a while so until the full report is complete, here is the...

Some might suggest I seek professional help for saying so but I really like the Link. A couple-three years ago I did a "thru-hike" of it with another VFTTer from Caps Ridge to Appalachia and thought it was a beautiful trail. I tend to enjoy rougher and lesser used routes (see my most recent...

    Big WildRiver-Moriah-ShelburneMoriah Loop, 8 July

Thanks, Unadogger. If you make this loop it might be better in the opposite direction of what I did. Going CCW would put the steepest stuff on the ascent and would get the relatively boring Shelburne Trail out of the way early. -vegematic
