    Big WildRiver-Moriah-ShelburneMoriah Loop, 8 July

I posted a trail condition earlier but here is the full report with pictures. It's a really excellent loop but if you prefer well maintained trails and enjoy the company of lots of other hikers it might not be for you... -vegematic

    Moriah Brook-CM-Kenduskeag-Shelburne Trails, 8 July 2011

Date of Hike: 8 July 2011 Trail Conditions: Moriah Brook Trail is in good shape for much of the way but had mud holes and was quite overgrown in places, particularly in the upper mile. There are several blowdowns that are annoying but not difficult. I had to take off my shoes for the two...

    Taxi Service

I have no experience with any of those taxi services but I agree with MichaelJ: leave your car at the finish and have the taxi shuttle you to your start point. There is also a new AT hiker hostel on RT 2 (south side) immediately west of the trail crossing at Shelburne. I don't know if they do...

    Slippery tent floor

I've heard vague recommendations for using silicon on tent floors (or sleeping pad bottoms) to prevent sliding around in the night. What does the collective wisdom of VFTT have to say about this? What form of silicon? Stripes or dots? Will it cause the treated item to stick to itself, and...

Lost my windshirt - can anyone suggest a replacement?

I thought reco was short for recommendation.

is it too early to start a "snow-free trails" thread?

Shelburne, NH trails It's a bit out of the way for most but I hiked the newly re-opened Scudder Trail up Mt. Ingalls (2240 ft) and then took a new connector to Mt. Cabot and followed the Blue Trail down. I encountered only the most minor patches of snow on that route. I tried to drop down to...

is it too early to start a "snow-free trails" thread?

I saw a post on NETC that South Moat is effectively snow free save for some easily avoided black ice on the ledges. Does anyone know about the ridge between N & S Moat? -vegematic

    Vermont's Mt. Monadnock

Thanks, I didn't get up there this past weekend. It looks like I'll not head up there until parking opens. -vegematic

    Don't eat glowing snow

Thanks for that. I was thinking they'd want to know about the longer-lived isotopes as they would be more dangerous (screwing things up for longer), but pinpointing the source makes sense. -vegematic

    Strapping Snowshoes on your Ruck

I think it depends on the sort of pack you have and what pockets and straps it comes with. My winter day pack has a shovel (or shove-it) panel on the back. This is a durable, large flap that is attached at the lower end and can open downward. I tuck my 'shoes in behind it and clip the panel...

    Don't eat glowing snow

I wonder why they tested for iodine and not cesium which has the much longer half-life (decades rather than days).

Would you like some peanut butter and jelly on your bread next time?

Wow! How lucky! I've never seen a fisher in real life but have seen pine martens on three occasions. -vegematic

Highwater Trail (Evans Notch), 2 April

Date of Hike: 2 April 2011, we went out about 1.5 mile from the suspension bridge. Trail Conditions: Wet, dense snow cover with few bare/thin spots. Snow bridges are rotten but water crossings not dangerous. Possibility of wet feet, though. Several blowdowns that could not be stepped over...

    Vermont's Mt. Monadnock

Maybe this weekend (Sunday?) if I can figure out parking. I'm always happy for company; it forces me to get up when the alarm goes off.

    Vermont's Mt. Monadnock

This past summer I enjoyed a hike to the rather less celebrated Mt. Monadnock in Lemington, VT. I am wondering if anyone knows whether there is winter parking available for this trail. I'm hoping to get up there in the next week or so. -vegematic

    Who's got spring/summer plans?

Only 75%? I thought that was a sure thing. I've got the John Muir Trail starting on 19 July with my niece.

How much do you spend per year in NH subject to rooms and meals tax?

I voted "less than $25" and it's probably very close to zero. Like Quietman I live in the region (albeit, in far western Maine) so I either go home at night to sleep and eat or I'm camping out with food I brought with me. Most of what little tax I pay to NH occurs when I'm doing my household...

favorite/most convenient town in the Whites ?

I clicked other. Living in Bethel North Conway is the most convenient to us for general household shopping. Gorham used to have a nice grocery store but Wally World took care of that. If I were choosing a place to live in the Whites (besides Bethel, which may not count as *in* the Whites) I'd...

know of any trails with wider tracks?

Yesterday I climbed Mt. Caribou from the east (Bog Rd in Gilead, ME) and it was well packed out before us by a group pulling sleds. The track should easily accommodate Tubbs. -vegematic
