    e-readers on the trail?

Great point! Plenty of stuff comes with a silica packet, now I have a good reason not to toss it. -vegematic

    e-readers on the trail?

I purchased a Sony Pocket Reader and just received it. The first thing I did when I unpacked it was, of course, weigh it. It came in at 151 grams. Then I weighed a couple of average-size paperbacks that we had laying around and they came in between 120 and 170 grams. Supposedly it can go two...

    e-readers on the trail?

I am seriously considering purchasing an ebook reader for backpacking trips, particularly those lasting more than a week. I really like to read at night before sleeping and an ereader seems like a lightweight way to bring an assortment of books along. So fess up! Who is carrying a Kindle or...

    Middle Mtn, Shelburne, 9 Jan

Date of Hike: 9 Jan 2011 Trail Conditions: The first several hundred meters has had snowshoes, skis, bareboots, and dogs on it, making for a somewhat uneven walking experience. Above the split where the trail to Mt. Crag branches right we encountered only our snowshoe tracks from over a week...

Perkins Notch or Spruce Brook Shelter

Spruce Brook Shelter is gone, as is the privy, but there are tent pads. I believe the shelter at Perkins Notch is still standing but not very appealing. Both are lovely areas, though, if you can bring a tent or tarp. The Wild River valley is magical in winter. -vegematic

New camera necessary to improve image sharpness?

I have a Canon A610 that is nearly five years old and is my first digital. I love it but lately have been wanting sharper images and have not been able to get them. It is a 5mp camera that lacks RAW mode and image stabilization. I frequently use pre-set shooting modes (e.g. landscape) but...

Hello peakbagger! It was great to bump into you today on Middle Mtn. Was that you calling to us as we emerged from the Peabody Brook Trail? We could hear someone but I couldn't see them.

Thanks for the green. I'm glad you enjoyed the report. That's a good point you made about the flagging and one I hadn't thought of. I'm hoping to play hooky on Wednesday afternoon to go back up to Middle and check out their flagged route over to Peabody Brook.

    Bi-annual Red-lining contest

Well, I don't know if the weather was right for this on Saturday but I'm going to guess Jefferson via Caps Ridge with the 0.5 segment being the Cornice between Caps Ridge and Gulfside. -vegematic

Mt. Ingalls, Shelburne, NH, 7 Nov 2010

My other half joined be today for a visit to Mt. Ingalls via the newly reopened Scudder Trail. The drive in along the Mill Brook Road was easy enough and the parking lot was obvious as it had 4 other cars in it. We saddled up and set out. The trail at first was a gravel road which became...

Hiking Some Loops in the Shelburne, NH Area (02-Nov-2010)

I was on Middle Mtn the day before you. I enjoyed the views from Middle Mtn more than because they look off to the Mahoosucs and not Rt 2 and the Andro. I followed a few other unmarked paths in the area for short distances but only had limited time for exploring. Last night I went to a...

    Ocean view or opitical illusion

I was curious so I checked my Scudder's Guide. The chart shows the Atlantic ocean being visible slightly to the north of Silver Lake. The text says "Arrive at Chocorua's crest before 10 a.m. and catch the sun's glimmer off the Atlantic Ocean." I'd say you saw it. -vegematic

    Shelburne, NH: M-M Trail?

Thanks to both of you for the information. I hiked Mt. Cabot earlier this summer and kept an eye out for some sign of he trail to Mt. Ingalls but didn't see much. I was looking near the top of Cabot as that's where I thought the old trail left from. Sounds like I have some more exploring to...
