Infant formula advice on the trail

Day-hiked and alternated between carrying on my back and getting a jogging stroller. Before children, I forgot more WMNF logging woods and trailheads than I knew in CT. between parenting and then being a scout volunteer and twenty years later, I know almost as much about CT hiking as I do in...

    Mt Cabot Fatal

I didn't know her but feel like I should have. Looking at her peak list, several of her obscure (or not on lists) peaks I've done. (Moxham, Balm of Gilead, Vanderwhacker, Belfry, Noonmark, Peaked, Craig, Sentinel & Taft in Yosemite and the usual smaller NH Peaks.) Had my son left Clemson on...

    Reckless Hikers Pay "Penalty"

Hopefully they pay some costs also, however, stupidity is not a crime. They were not too difficult to find, and the weather was nice. Hopefully they will pay the fine themselves and not ask their folks for the money. If getting out of your car and walking in Franconia Notch makes you a hiker...

Old Bridle Path parking lot on a weekend in August?

You likely wouldn't want to be there in weather conditions that might bring solitude. Since it does get a fair (whatever that means) amount of full moon hiking even good weather nights, even that might not bring solitude.

Looks like a perfect storm holiday weekend coming up

There's room for both, don't give up your best blueberry hike or Mountain Laurel, (in bloom) hike, etc. In my case hidden CT hikes will still be in CT, therefore, I don't expect folks near the Whites, ADK or Catskills heading this way.

    Biggest Little Mt

Good Luck in your continued recovery and keep pushing yourself. My wife had demyelination of her myelin sheath on parts of her brain back in 2003. They never figured out if it was part of an infectious disease or some other cause. (Best description her Neurologist came up with was a single...

Looks like a perfect storm holiday weekend coming up

How about a Choir Challenge? Go someplace this weekend where you think you will not see many people. (On Saturday I'll be on a local open space property putting benches in as part of an Eagle Project) Sunday or Monday, I'll try and go someplace with limited crowds, hopefully. I know most...

    How to manage WMNF

Having done Kephart and Leconte during Tropical Storm Dennis, I understand the idea of hiking in poor weather to fit into the schedule. (I had a week in TN and if I had picked a different day, I would have missed Dollywood with my in-laws and kids who were five and two. We certainly weren't...

    ADK parking etc

If I want to skip the road, walk, how early on Saturday 10/1 do you think I have to arrive at the HPIC? This time I likely will be solo so arriving at 6:00 should be easy as opposed to trying to wake three sixteen-year-old boys back in 2019. Weather permitting, it's been a while since I've...

    How to manage WMNF

I wonder if news of fires in the area prevent people from heading there or if from CA population centers, fires block main access roads. (That said, Yosemite and the Grand Canyon are filled with plates from all over the country and Canada also.) Both are incredibly beautiful. Crowds have made...

    How to manage WMNF

As other's mentioned, Parks established in wide open sparsely populated areas 100 years ago can be set up different than a National Forest Established over 200 years after people began to inhabit the area. (Well Yellowstone and Western areas were inhabited, we moved those people from their...

    Camp Dodge Trail??

Someone I know did it last week and didn't mention any brushing or signage that it was closed. They probably should post it officially. (Although I would think people staying at the camp would continue to use it. It's too bad some people wandering around buildings and parking where they...

    Winter hiking cures cancer

Not sure I would make that correlation? Even crazy people do some healthy things. Now to go for a walk....:D

New National Water Dashboard - Big Changes

The Allagash and far northern Maine I've been told has been pretty good. (Figure, this is an off year for our scout trip.) They have been promoting the new sites for some time being officially unveiled on 1/1.

    "Hiker" Falls off Cannon Cliffs

Just saw the identity of the victim, may be one of my wife's former students.

Boots: lightweight with limestone resistant soles

To add to what nartreb said, what is he wearing and calling lightweight? The pair that fit his feet best would be the one to wear. Depending on his ankle strength and his "typical" hike, you could be looking at a wide range of shoes/boots. I have found, (at least in the brands I looked...

How to Cover the Costs of Mountain Mishaps

Going back in the Way Back VFTT machine, we did lose a VFTT'er when he went out to attempt Shasta and a helicopter did crash during that search. It was at least one and two major VFTT implosions and was back when rec.backcountry and rec.climbing were all together.

    Maine Woods National Monument

I have to think they will do something with the dam, eventually as the river is about the only other recreation in that area other than BSP. If paddling the East Branch became less than enjoyable, it might push more people to travel to the Allagash where crowds at times are an issue. (Well...

How to Cover the Costs of Mountain Mishaps

One of the biggest ways one measures a Society is based on its compassion for one another. They did something wrong, planned poorly, brought bad gear, went in bad weather, etc, they deserve to die? Speeders in winter should be left to get out of their mangled cars and not risk the lives of...
