    Whitegrass Festival, Mt Abram, Maine

I will be playing (my trusty mandolin) at the Whitegrass Festival at Mt Abram (http://www.mtabram.com/). Show times will be Saturday night from 6-8:30, the other on Sunday at 1pm. I am playing with Sam Reid and the Riot Act (http://www.facebook.com/samreidandtheriotact). I will also be hiking...

Hiking Mt Abram, ME (in that area)

Hi, I am playing a few gigs at the Mt Abram Ski Area next weekend; March 5, etc. I will be arriving Friday night. I was hoping to be able to hike something worthwhile the following day. Here are the parameters and thoughts: Close enough to Locke Mills or Bethel, like 15 or so miles (I have...

Opinions on Sunday hike to Kinsmans w Cold Snap

Tricky Decision I've hiked in a windy -20 and it was kind of spooky, but since I was so well equipped, it was fine, I just knew if something went wrong, it could go VERY wrong fast. I say if you are equipped and you sense a good group with a solid attitude, go for it! And I am sure you will...

    Agree Kevin, you are correct.

    Skookumchuck in the snow?

Great Trail in Snow I would wait until there is a lot of snow. There are places that seem magical, sort of storybook-like if there is a lot of snow. If you are breaking trail, it can be endless. Never done it without snow. I never had an issue finding my way.

AMC's Trail Sign Auction has started

What an Idea! I suppose a crafty and adventurous thief could make some good cash? I am not the only one that has thought of that, right? Now, if signs start disappearing, don't look at me!

Save the date: Saturday November 6, Pat and Audrey's potluck

Uh Oh Dare I say that I am coming? Seems like a gig slips in every year and ruins it. I also have a new puppy (redundant?)...so it might be tough to figure out how to keep him happy and warm while I enjoy all the Agave that Stan is going to bring. I am saving the date.

    Highland Center Roof

Very true Stan! The "Green" movement has created somewhat sudden and radical changes in the building world. Some of these practices are implemented just so everything stays "green." A good honest builder is hard to find, and I am sure a knowledgeable and responsible "green" builder is even more...

    Highland Center Roof

Roof and Moisture Moisture that gathers on the roof sheathing (plywood, etc) can be caused by several things. Some overlooked but common issues are poor insulation, a lack of vapor control and possible air pockets or leaks that cause the warm moist air to condensate on the roof during certain...

    Highland Center Roof

Leak? Using my builder guessing skills, I am willing to be that you are correct. There was a leak, and it had to do with poor install or a lack of underlayment. Expensive fix!

    Tent on a cot?

60 Bucks? Sounds like maybe the quality could be an issue. Like my good friend says, "Everything costs at least 50 bucks." (and everything takes at least an hour) So $60? Wasted money I would guess.

Bear in N. Conway dumpster bites man taking out trash

The bear didn't exactly bite According to the article, the bear actually scratched the guy. Big difference I would think.

    Deet Ate My GPS!!!

Yes, it does damage! I played a wedding years ago. The bugs came out, and since playing fast fiddle tunes and getting stabbed by mosquitos doesn't really mix, I grabbed my Deet. Days later, where my arm was rubbing against my mandolin, all the finish was peeling off. I still use the stuff, but...

EMS not standing behind their products

Are you a member? YES! And I love you for recognizing that. I want to be left alone, but a bit of eye contact is nice if I want to get some attention. I cannot stand REI asking if you are a member every second you turn a corner. I avoided being a member for that very reason (well maybe a few...

    Hawks Nesting in Cambridge

I searched for a relevant post, but nothing, so: There is a very accessible and viewable nest in the Alewife area in cambridge that houses red-tailed hawks. Thought it might be a nice thing to know for all you hawk and bird fans...
