Scattered Paint on North Twin Spur

That is true. The trained eye may notice a subtle difference, but perhaps to the casual eye, it would be harder to perceive. It would certainly be better than the way it is now.

Scattered Paint on North Twin Spur

It may seem ridiculous, but one of the ways we were instructed to get rid of rogue blazes was using tree paint that is similiar to the appropriate bark. It sounds dumb because to get rid of paint that shouldn't be there, is to apply more paint, but it is one method.

Scattered Paint on North Twin Spur

Oh my gosh, I wish I hadn't seen that. Just a little insight how this can cause problems. As we all know, there is an approach to Mt Cabot that has been closed for some time. I went to school with some of the members of the family who closed part of the trail that crossed their land. While...

    Isolation via Glen Boulder?

Last time I did that route was last year. It is really enjoyable, the views and time above treeline are great as opposed to an ascent via Rocky Branch. When ascending Rocky Branch I have only observed that the first crossing would pose a little trouble if levels are high, then again, I am not 74...

    A Weekend Among the Clouds - 6/17 to 6/19/11

Those are great shots Mark! What a wonderful time! I believe the picture you lissted as being ID"d by the Flower Society is the Moss Plant- cassiope hyponides. I'm pretty sure the other one you mentioned looking for ID help is a Fir Clubmoss amidst bilberry, I just couldn't tell if it was Bog or...

Children, sports, hiking, and acceptable risk

As long as I can remember Trish, I had heard the stories of hikers who had lost their lives in the Whites. If it wasn't stories told me by the old-timers, it was the plethora of books in the house that did. Amazingly so, even at a young age, I did not want to be a statistic. I don't remember my...

Biggest D'oh "That Was Stupid" Moment

Gosh, it seems as if it could be an endless reservoir of material. Most recently however, last June amidst that crazy heat ( and I do blame that for the failed synapse connection). Michele and I had come up from Galehead, done both Twins, set up at Guyot, did the Bonds, then retreated to camp as...

Highpoint: Hawaii. Mauna Kea (13796 ft). April 20, 2011

One of the best black sand beaches on the Big Island has got to be Punalu'u! It has some of the best textured black sand we found. Did you hike Kilauea Iki? Very short and easy hike, but it has one of the most fantastic smelling forests. It has a ginger forest that will just blow your olfactory...

A Reminiscent 24 Year Old TR, or the Essay That Wasn't

Wow Dave, thanks! I had no idea that could be done. Can I ask how you did it? is it something only Mod's can do?

A Reminiscent 24 Year Old TR, or the Essay That Wasn't

Holy Cow, I Can't Believe There is a Part 3 Wilderness is the purest form of natural detoxification. A mountain-hewn cathedral of purification. That is why we need it. Whether we find it by stepping off an established trail or an epic trek to a far-flung destination, we will always pursue it...

A Reminiscent 24 Year Old TR, or the Essay That Wasn't

Reminiscent 24 Year Old TR Part 2 Yet, we cannot escape the fact that as humans, when we enter a wild place we are, in a way, an intrusion. Perhaps you have noticed what happens when we get started on a trail or begin a bushwhack. The natural inhabitants of these areas give us a wide berth...

A Reminiscent 24 Year Old TR, or the Essay That Wasn't

Last year I entered an essay in the annual Waterman Essay Contest. The theme was, ironically the same as this year, What is wild? How is it defined?, Why Do We Need It? I thought back to one of my solo sojourns as a 16 year old and decided to write about it. It didn't win, but placed in the Top...

    Trail Tools

I carry loppers, adze, axe, and on occasion, a hand saw. Standard, no questions asked. This does not include planned blazing trips, when the load adds up a bit more. Here are the dealers I have bought from in the past. All these years of trailwork and I still have some of my original tools...

    Who's got spring/summer plans?

Much of the usual, though this year one week is being bought out mid-September to celebrate my in-laws 40th wedding anniversary. What a 2011. Our daughter and our niece graduate, its the 20th for me and the mrs, and the 15th for two of her sisters and their husbands. One week, one house, 14...

Hello cooperhill! That is pretty much the same vein, though I've done it different ways. Have found it best that first trip is strictly blowdowns and waterbars. Be it as it may, the AMC choppin crew sometimes gets there first as they fly through early season. We've bested them at least twice...

Trail Maintainence in the Whites, what's Ok ?

I love trails and I love trail maintenance, as an Adopter it is the most legal means to get my axe-wielding lust satisfied. WG is right that erosion is the key issue for Adopters. That being said, if I'm hiking routes not normally taken by myself or not readily used by others, I usually check...

Article on Bretton Woods ski area in NY Times

Here comes my speech, and it is neither a condone or condemn angle. First, the article was well-written and I enjoyed it. Now for the rest: I worked many years at BW, in the summer we just drove over Cherry Mt Road, in the winter, the normal route. Chances are if you were born in the mid to late...
