    Dog carrier

We got a pack-a-paw from Mountain Dogware for our Cattle-dog/Corgi mix. Never had to use it, but it was relatively easy to set up and get him in it the few times I tested it. He was not amused (see below) but it gave me a lot of peace of mind in his last years. If I recall correctly, it was also...

AMC Huts - What Happens If Weather Is Unsafe For Travel?

Eons ago, I did get a refund for a stay at Lakes due to an heavy rainstorm that made the trails up unsafe. AMC didn't give me a hard time, but I did get the impression that it doesn't happen unless the weather is pretty extreme.

Peakbagger - In remembrance July 2024

Oh no. I've never posted much, but I was always impressed by, and grateful for, the incredible, in-depth knowledge he shared and his ability to engage in disagreements in a kind and thoughtful way. What a loss, but what a legacy.

    3-day backpacking in NW VT

I've heard it's one of the steeper sections, but from the maps it looks flatter than the hiking trails in the area, no? Agreed, though, the Catamount is definitely not maintained as a hiking trail and gets messy in places.

    3-day backpacking in NW VT

The Catamount (xc ski trail) and VAST (snowmobile) trails might be flatter - I don't think either has established tent sites, but dispersed camping should be an option.

May 19, 2024 a busy day For Fish and Game

Didn't some clever clog do a "study" at Monadnock several years back trying to prove that the "10 essentials" weren't really necessary or helpful? (IIRC, the study consisted of surveying hikers before and after their hike on whether or not they had the gear, and whether it improved their...

    Acadia Best day hikes

It's my fave as well - although I prefer the "hiking and biking" version, which also has mileage for the carriage roads. Carriage Roads may be more "gentle stroll" than "vigorous hike" but you can use them to connect trails for longer loops, etc.

    Acadia Best day hikes

I love the trails around Parkman, Sargeant and Bald Mountains - great views, some fun rock scrambles here and there, and they tend to be less crowded. You could also put together some longer loops combining Dorr and Cadillac. If you're on Facebook, you can check out the Acadia NP hiking page...

    Colorado 14ers private access liability

I'm curious how that last bullet doesn't just muddy up the liability issue again, especially in light of the lawsuit filed by a mountain biker who crashed on a washed-out trail. Because sure, I might know if there are mines on my property (especially if my family built them), but keeping track...

    adventure books for 17-yo girl

"Annapurna: A Woman's Place" or "Breaking Trail" by Arlene Blum. The latter is more of a memoir while "Annapurna" focuses more on that specific expedition.

    shoulder crossbody sling bag wanted

Oh sure - I wouldn't use a lumbar pack if I had to carry much more than what's listed (although having hips does help with the sliding issue - they have to be good for something, right?). I was just going off my experience with the kind of items and distances OP describes. For me, though, I can...

    shoulder crossbody sling bag wanted

Ok, for what it’s worth, we have something very similar to this Eddie Bauer cross-body bag, and for shorter hikes like you describe where less stuff is required, it will easily hold water, snacks, wallet/keys/iphone and full-sized birding binoculars (you said you carry a camera, but that can be...

For all those that hike with their dogs...

Tough little dogs - and great hunters, too. I think my hips could keep an entire sled team going for a while - and they'd be welcome to them.

Petition to change the name of Mt Washington

This. I suspect my politics/views are closer in general to Teo's then some of the folks arguing on the other side, but unless and until I hear Indigenous communities and their representatives lobbying for changes like these, I'm not going to take them seriously. There's also a petition making...

The Ammonoosuc Ravine trail is closed

I have no idea if there's been an official closure let alone who would make that call. I do know that one of the groups participating in a fundraising hike I'm involved with started down Ammo from Lakes at the suggestion of the Hut crew and had to turn around at the water crossing about .5 from...

Old car image search on Google is a neat tool!

Very cool! Thanks for sharing. My BiL is a big car buff, and it'll be fun to send him pics from our hikes with better guesses on what they are.

How “Essential” Are the Ten Essentials? According to This Study: Not Very

I think studying the necessity/effectiveness of "The Essentials" is a great idea but I'm not sure I'd put much weight in what seems more like an opinion poll of with a very limited sample size.
