New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

I was, indeed, thank you :) Not saying I wouldn't be willing to pay into the SAR funds just as the hunting/fishing/orv communities do if they come up with a sane and equitable way to do it, but given the revenues and funding mechanisms they already have, I'm puzzled that SAR funding remains an...

New Hampshire Fish and Game Search and Rescue Funding Hearing

skiguy - some NH state parks do charge day-use or parking fees, but of the trail head fees are for the White Mountain National Forest, and those go to the Feds. I seem to recall someone here posting that New Hampshire gets some kind of compensation from the Feds for providing services in the...

Climber Who Left Partner Cited for Disorderly Conduct

I'm wondering if - either because he had the spot or because, thinking along the lines of Chip's example, Shade convinced/pushed him - Selwyn climbed farther than he should have or might have otherwise. Not something we can really answer, but interesting to ponder.

Climber Who Left Partner Cited for Disorderly Conduct

True, but now that Shade has the only rope, and his partner is left behind, the "waited and waited" situation (say the rescue has to be aborted or seriously delayed for some reason) goes from being a "very, very bad situation to rap in" to "no option but to hope you don't freeze to death." And...

    Sad Passing of Tuckerman RIP

Never had the pleasure of meeting Tuck, but I know how much my dogs have meant to me and my heart goes out to his friends and family.

    Dog Q - Retractable Leashes

Me, personally, I just find the standard leash more comfortable to hold for any length of time, harder to drop or have pulled out of my hand, and much easier to manually "retract" if I need to get him back in a hurry and he's not responding to a recall (doesn't happen much anymore, and I'm...

    Dog Q - Retractable Leashes

FWIW, if Nellie's only 40 lbs, I don't think you need the "100 lb rated" leash - I frankly think those are overkill even for 100lb dogs. As long as the handle is comfortable for you to hold, why deal with the extra weight? I do think the "tape" leads are a better idea, though - in addition to...

    Stun Gun Used on Hiker

I'm inclined to give them (the rescuers) the benefit of the doubt that they used it as a last or only resort, short of abandoning the guy. I do think it's probably bs to consider charging him with assault since it sounds like he wasn't in his right mind.

    Water for Wounds

I imagine licking your own wounds is better than nothing, but letting a dog do the work would really be a last resort. They may have immunity/resistance to the bacteria in their own systems, but I don't think we do.

    Nellie's first hike

ditto. As someone who also has a reactive dog (although we've made a ton of progress with him), if I saw someone stopping with their dog and trying to maintain space, I'd probably ask you what you wanted us to do - walk past while you held Nellie, step off and hold Augs while you went past...

Family sues Park Service over Aggressive Goat

Since the suit was announced (it hasn't been filed) 2 months after the action plan was revised, and government agencies being what they are we can assume the revision process took at least a year...I'm betting no. Although it may have taken a serious accident/death to get that process started.

Sept. 14: New Draft Management Plan for the Middlesex Fells

For those who have in interest in the Middlesex Fells - the DCR will unveil it's draft management plan for the Fells at a public meeting on 9/14. (for some background on the previous plans, you can start here: http://tinyurl.com/3s7tklv it's an AMC page, but I find their summaries, while they...

Black bear sighting...would you tell ?

Which is why I would NEVER consider offering them unsolicited advice. Bears, I figure, are less likely to have such hang-ups ;)

    Leave no Trace...Really?

I'm not sure the critters would be interested in the TP, so much as what the TP was buried with

    Leave no Trace...Really?

First, thank you for the dieting help. Second, I thought the article said Capt. LNT claimed this was ideal, not necessary/mandatory? But no, I would not drink my dishwater. And not just because I let my dog do the pre-rinse on our plates.

Black bear sighting...would you tell ?

Warn the bear? ;) I leash my dog, make sure the hunter knows I'm there (assuming it's not fat red-head season), and get the heck out of Dodge.

Black bear sighting...would you tell ?

Of course :) I just don't think it's somehow insulting to a dog to assume there's a good chance its prey drive will kick in. Can we differentiate between doling out unsolicited advice, and just giving someone a heads-up? Not a fan of condescension, either, but I think if you saw me walking...

Black bear sighting...would you tell ?

I think it's fair to assume that MOST dogs are going to behave in a less-than-idea fashion if face-to-face with a bear. That's a heck of a lot of instinct to over-ride.

Black bear sighting...would you tell ?

If I thought they, their dogs, or the bear were in danger, I'd probably let them know, even if they were being clueless. Why let the dogs or the bear get hurt because the humans are being dumb? Besides, if I saw someone walking out into traffic, I'd probably try to stop/warn them. I don't...
