    Glacier National Park

I highly recommend http://www.glacier.nationalparkschat.com for Glacier-related hikes and other info. Assuming Going to the Sun is open to Logan pass, the Highline Trail along the Garden Wall is a fantastic hike. It's 14-ish miles as an out-and-back from Logan Pass (get there early) depending...

Works for me, too, but you can also find the story here: https://www.cnn.com/2019/02/05/us/colorado-runner-chokes-mountain-lion/index.html

Pack bag - covered by warranty or not?

This. I don't think I've ever had the lamination on a bag or other piece of gear last anywhere near 20+ years, regardless of use or storage.

    Compression sock advice

I've worn pro-compression Marathon Elite while hiking (https://procompression.com/collections/marathon-elite) - a little cheaper than the X Bionics, although they're thinner than most of the woolies I've worn hiking. I'm not sure how warm they'd be in Winter, and fwiw, my feet felt really sweaty...

    Two Really Good New Movies

Seriously, I was on the edge of my seat watching the movie, and I knew how it ended! I can't imagine having watched/filed it live.

    Too Old to Hike?

I've met some 80 year-olds that I'd feel safer hitting the trails with than some youngsters. Sounds like the started out with a reasonable plan, but then kept throwing good money after bad when their detour proved more challenging than expected.

Hiker to be Charged for Rescue

Donations to the AMC are tax-deductible, but (as with all 501c3's) only the amount over and above the value of any goods or services you receive. So I can't legally use the cost of a Hut stay to get a tax deduction. And those Hut stays are subject to New Hampshire's R&M tax. Because the guests...

Fish and Game rescues hikers not prepared for terrain, weather

Perhaps F&G or whoever has decided that the threat of monetary fines won't really sway anyone (who cares about fines if I know I'm too smart to wind up in trouble, I mean it's just a dayhike.....) and they're trying to emphasize the risks/hazards? eg, if you get hurt, it's going to be a loooong...

Woman climbs tree to escape coyotes - Near Boston!

This. The first time my dog and I encountered a coyote in the Middlesex Fells, I had no idea that so many of them lived in the area, had no expectation or running into one in what I felt to be a fairly urbanized setting, and certainly no idea of how worried to be or what to do. Had it not run...

    Danger, danger!!!

The football program generates gazillions in alumni donations and other revenues. They will happily continue to throw student athletes into the meat grinder to preserve that, long-term damage be damned.

Best Cities To Work And Live For Hiking

From a friend: I have another former hiking pal who's lived in Livingston and now Gardiner, MT. - and she's found lots of great outdoor options outside the national parks, too. You can see some of her photographs here: http://chatanikaphotography.zenfolio.com/

Possible Admission Fee increase at some National Parks

Assuming it continues to work the way it does now, your group pays $70. The individual fees are aimed at people who bike or walk in. Possibly folks arriving via tour bus - not sure about the last group.

Latest Glacier NP intel, in case you're planning a trip

I don't, but the forum I linked to does - they're finally getting some rain on the West side, which is putting a damper on the Sprague fire, and snow elsewhere which has helped with some of the other smaller fires. From what people were posting, the East side was getting some smoke, but people...

Latest Glacier NP intel, in case you're planning a trip

Ah, this brings back memories! Had a magical trip to Glacier about 5 years ago. Got to do a two-night stay at the Sperry Chalet, and almost started crying when I read about it burning. Thanks for the intel and the reminder of that trip, TwinMom! Brian, before we went I got a LOAD of great...
