    Mt. Webster

One of my favorite short hikes. Get most of the climbing done early with a nice workout, then ridge cruising with great outlooks and lots of fun but low risk scrambling. I've done it in Summer and Winter, day and night, sun and rain, etc. Liked it every time. This route seems to always deliver...

    Winter Backpacking Boots

Yah that is what I have generally read. The VBL should prevent moisture from getting into your sock, the boot's insulation, etc. So you do skin (or thin liner) > VBL > Socks. I personally don't like the sensation of the wrinkles and "crumpling" I feel through a thin sock so I go with the normal...

    Winter Backpacking Boots

From what I have read, the accumulation of moisture that can't escape reduces the amount of evaporative cooling and that is why you stay warm. I don't really notice a ridiculous amount of moisture but my feet run cold and I wear the VBL outside of a wool sock. The feel of a VBL against the skin...

    And So It Begins!

A few websites I saw this on said it was in Airplane Gully.

    Off Trail Fatal on Kinsman

I had what I believe was a Black Diamond Half Dome helmet and the product description on the website I bought it only states that it uses "co-molded foam" so I'm not sure what its attributes should have. On my particular helmet, the foam became somewhat brittle (along the lines of the type of...

    Mount Resolution In Winter

I figured as a back up if this is the case would be some of the open ledge areas past the Crawford split before the Davis Path turns North. Wouldn't have the Easterly exposure I want but I've caught some awesome sunsets in that area heading out of the woods in the past. Can always convert it to...

    Mount Resolution In Winter

Yah I don't remember it well. I went through my photos but didn't have anything of the ledges. It was 5/27/23 and I remember some wet spots so I wasn't sure of melt water iced it up there. I do recall that it hugged the left side but I don't really recall the woods to the side or above. Thanks...

    Mount Resolution In Winter

Do people hike Mt Resolution in Winter? I'm looking for a good spot for night photography over the next 2-6 weeks (without a lengthy or aggressive hike in) and possible camping and this seems like a good fit with the relatively short hike. I was wondering about those ledges though just before...

    Crampon Fit Issue

I've o I've owned a few pairs of Asolo boots and I find them tight in the toe box and not particularly warm (those things are probably related). My feet are always cold. When it gets below 20 deg F just about anything I wear (other than the Baffin boots I mentioned above) does not keep my feet...

Hypothermic Hikers Rescued in the Pemi

Any best practices you want to share? I'm particularly curious about the getting dry in the pouring rain strategy. Love to hear your thoughts.

    AMC sign Auction

It's really a donation to the RMC isn't it? If all you wanted was a sign the replica makers posted in this thread are far more affordable. This guy on the other hand...

    Off Trail Fatal on Kinsman

Me too....after dislocating my shoulder on a fall on Cannon Mt where my arm got pinned behind me. Your concern is valid. :p Only time I use the straps now is significant river crossings so I don't drop and lose a pole.

    Mount Hale November 24th

That spot looks a bit different now. I came through there on a S-N Bonds/Twins traverse this Summer and the now I think official rerouting of North Twin Trail made that tell tale thin tree where you'd turn up the bank less obvious with the new foot tread. I didn't investigate it but I wanted to...

I do the same for the most part. Just assuming in this case they didn't do that

    Hiker Fatality in Catskills (??)

Is the reason for the closure? Man what a terrible story. https://www.cnn.com/2024/11/26/us/pilot-dog-killed-plane-crash-new-york/index.html

    Hiker Fatality in Catskills (??)

I came across a trail closure for the Escarpment Trail today doing some reading. It was very vaguely worded but eluded to a closed section of the Escarpment Trail for a recovery. I almost hiked South of there last week and know they got hit with about 18 inches of snow in that general area so I...

Hypothermic Hikers Rescued in the Pemi

When I first started Winter hiking I used to do this based on recommendations I got here. I don't really see the point to it. You have to take all your layers off to make the change so you dump any heat you were generating and get cold. And for me at least, it didn't take long to sweat in the...

    Off Trail Fatal on Kinsman

Shouldn't have thrown out my helmet. If I ever go downhill skiing again and pull my gear out of he garage I might have needed it to avoid a head injury while I was buckling the boots. :P

Hypothermic Hikers Rescued in the Pemi

I'd be curious to know how many experienced hikers actually carry an extra set of clothes. I would think not that many. Sometimes I'll carry sleeping clothes in a dry sack on overnight/multi-day hikes but I never have two pairs of pants, two shirts, etc. Seems like wasted weight, especially if...

    2024: Leas snow than normal

I agree that we have reduced emissions in the US. My table and your table say the same thing. We obviously can control our emissions. We have cut them quite a bit. But why do you expect progress if the US and world is still adding to emissions? To see progress, we need to REMOVE c02 from the...
