Woman flown off Denali after refusing to climb any farther

I'm not sure but probably because the park service charges a fee. Much like, I suspect, the Govt has to share in the Gulf clean-up... because they shared in the profits. (Only banks can enjoy pure upside with subsidized risk). By charging the peak fee they, in some way, take on the nanny role...

Petzl Reverso 3 vs. Black Diamond ATC Guide

I had the Reverso1 for years and loved it - but just lost it. I've recently replaced it with the BD Guide but have only used it for one session. I'm sure it will be fine. Getting used to a new rappel speed is my only real concern. If I have any great feedback later I will post.

EMS not standing behind their products

Actually the Board screwed this one up. They allowed the company to become lost in a sea of meaningless messages then handed control to a new CEO who launched in a new and poorly-informed direction and now they are back to floundering with painful debt levels and directionless marketing. And...

Wall Face - Indian Pass shelter

Thanks a bunch Redshorts. I was going in Thurs and Fri but the rain changed our plans. Appreciate you sprucing things up a bit for us. Make sure to leave plenty of firewood and a bottle of scotch for us. Appreciate everyone's feedback. I saw the current Alpinist today and there is an...

Wall Face - Indian Pass shelter

I was until the weather forecast went to hell. I'll probably reload and try again soon. Have you climbed the diagonal - any beta? Wallface has quite a reputation.

Wall Face - Indian Pass shelter

Anyone know if there is still a shelter about 4 miles in - coming from the south side of Indian Pass? I remember from many years ago and hoping to go visit wallface in the next week or so. Thanks!

    Black flies are out.

... and in Southern Vermont as well. Apparently they are able to survive late season snowstorms.

    What happens in Vegas...

I love climbing at Red Rocks and have spent several weeks out there over the years. It's the best thing about Vegas.

    Glastenbury vt

I have heard there are old abandoned buildings there but not sure where or how to get there. Or how good they are and are they cool enough to help me lure my boys into a long hike to see it?

Half Dome - permits now required + a question

I'm not sure about which campground or area. I hiked by in May towards Snake Dike (WF) and saw no one in the camp areas on my way up and back down from the cable route (EF). At some point those trails merged. That whole plateau looks like a wonderful place to camp and a great way to break up...

Dorset Peak VT - From Both Sides Now 4/11/2010

Very nice! I haven't quite figured out which path I like best.

    Acclimitize to a 14-er

My last trip to the Sierra's (Palisades) wiped me out because we hiked up fast and then never rested and it crushed me for several days. When I hiked Whitney I went up and back in a day and now prefer that over taking the time to acclimatize. As Darl58 says, I have found no consistency in...

Do you hike in the dark?

On purpose and often for me. Especially in Winter, it is a great way to experience the hills.

    Helmets.

I just started wearing one for skiing to set a good example for my kids. I love the helmet skiing trees. Now I can crash branches with my head down and am much bolder in the trees than without the helmet. A helmet 100% saved my life climbing several years ago and I remain a lifelong advocate...

Very nice. Congrats to both of you on a good full day with a high level of commitment.

    Would you climb Mt Everest?

I don't see any reason to trek beyond Ama Dablan; better climbing, no crowds, tolerable elevation on one of the world's most beautiful mountains. I have not found any true redeeming value for Everest other than height. Years ago some magazine listed the second seven summits - #2 on each...

    Safety gear conundrum.

My opinion is formed by a couple experiences and observations; 1. People do HUGE trips with minimal gear all the time with great safety. Between the Iditasport events, the AK Wilderness Classic summer and winter events, and all the similar informal trips, we have seen that people can go...

    Patagonia and environmental sustainability

Unfortunately, you could not be more incorrect. I am working with one of the most socially conscious businesses in the country - whose product is known by everyone - and insolvent. Because the CEO was busy pretending to be Jesus and not a CEO, the whole enterprise is on the verge of...
