    GPS questions

No doubt battery life is still a major limiter with smartphones used as GPS. However, I can get about 10 hours of GPS track-recording time on my Android smartphone (Samsung Exhilarate) using the app Backcountry Navigator, if I don't turn the screen on too often. I also make sure the phone is in...

Anyone doing the Mt Washington Road Race 2013?

(Three time finisher; mid packer.) If you're a mid packer or back of the packer my advice is to take regular walking breaks right from the start -- don't try to run it all. To train, if you don't have a mountain to run up, a treadmill set at 12 percent grade works well.

    Pemi Loop with dumb luck

Seems like lots of people were thinking Pemi Loop on Saturday. It was just a great day out there, as all the reports attest. Started just after Bombadil at about 3:45 am and went counter-clockwise. Although Bombadil had broken out Twinway earlier in the week, it had pretty much drifted over...

A new long one: The Gorham Loop

AMC guide online says 40.5 miles with 16,817' gain. Not too shabby. Can you be a little more specific than "a bunch of hours?"

Vermont native attempts record run on Long Trail

The blog page on the thelongtrailfilm.com site hasn't been updated recently (maybe they are kind of busy!), but I found this article from Vermont Today: http://www.vermonttoday.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/RH/20120817/NEWS01/708179856 Hope she makes it! Incidently, some of the rocks on the...

Camera lost for 3 years in ADK Creek to be returned to owner!

Great story. I found a camera on the Gould Trail on Mt Greylock a couple years ago. On it were pictures of a kid's birthday party. In one of the pictures the name of the entertaining clown was visible. I found the clown's website, and through the clown I was able to return the camera to the owner.

    NH 48 speed record

Carrigain? On the Tom/Field/Willey traverse last night at 9:47p and heading up the Wildcat Ski trails this morning at 5:30a as planned, but Spot returned no points from Carrigain which was planned for last night. But the Carrigain route is all heavily wooded, where Spot doesn't work too well...

    What constitutes an "unsupported hike"?

There is a website called "Fastest Known Time" in which the classes "supported," "self-supported," and "unsupported" are differentiated: http://fastestknowntime.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=readfirst&action=display&thread=19 Here it is specifically stated that "Unsupported also means...

    What is Dirrettisima?

In international climbing circles the term “direttissima” simply means the most direct, and often hardest, route to a summit. For example, here’s a book on the Eiger direttissima...

Shortest Continuous Footpath of the New Hampshire 4000'ers

The open circuit route is pretty close to Mats Roing's route, including the Presis split, which is pretty interesting. Of course all the bushwacking required for the open circuit route might just be a little time consuming. ;-) A close approximation of the open circuit route, but using trails...

Again, thanks a bunch for your volunteer work, and thanks for the very informative details about trail maintenance in Wilderness Areas. That explains a lot. I don't, however, really understand why they would ban blazes (by blazes I assume we're talking about paint blazes, not the axe-chopped...
