Madison/Adams is all I need to finish my W48, too! (read your Carrigain TR). Not sure when I can get up that way, but I'll keep you posted if plans materialize. Good Luck on your finish! It looks like there will be quite a few of us finishing up this winter!

Bonds Traverse, As Good As It Gets, 2/4/2012

Earl, that was a day I won't soon forget! Between the weather, the views and the friends, it was very special. It was nice to meet some folks in person who I felt like I knew already from their posts here as well! Earl and Sue: congrats on a Z-B traverse in all 12 months! Kevin: Happy...

Coyotes: Followed by a pack in Belknaps. Anyone else ever have an issue with them?

I was quite surprised to see a link to the CR as a citation for anything, myself!:D

Coyotes: Followed by a pack in Belknaps. Anyone else ever have an issue with them?

Hey, Don't go dissin' the Caledonian Record. That was my hometown newspaper growing up! I read the blog article at the CR link. It sounded relaible to me. Tests were done on two seperate animals by professionals which showed them to share DNA with wolves.

    Isolation attempt 1/28/12

LarryD, Brewster and I attempted Iso on Saturday. Our plan was to nab Iso for Larry (W48) and N. Iso for Brewater and I (WinterTW72). We made it to the height of land on Engine Hill and found the bushwack unbroken. The trail WAS broken by one set of tracks. We opted for the bushwack, attempting...

Mount Washington Observatory Summit Volunteer 1/19-25/12/11

Kevin, that first picture in the Rime section looked like clouds to me! It reminded me of the Stieglitz image "Equivalent". One of my favorites.

OR Meteor Mitts with either liner gloves, or wool mitten, depending on weather. They are bomb proof.

    Monroe, Washington, Jefferson 1-22-12

Up Ammo, down Jewell. Weather was perfect. great visibility and low winds all day. Snow depth is increasing, and we used snowshoes all day. Ammo was much less icy than I expected, and the 'shoes were sufficient traction. A great day out with good friends Mike Costanza, Paradox, and Marty, with...

A fine weekend to start the season

That was my favorite shelter on the Long trail. My two favorite backcountry sunrises so far have been there, and at Guyot shelter. If you like Glastenbury, then you should read this book: http://www.amazon.com/Glastenbury-History-Vermont-Ghost-Town/dp/1596293373 My grandfather supplied many...

Pierce and Ike via CrawfordPath/Edmands/Mt. Clinton Rd

Went up Crawford Path. There is still minimal snow, although there was some drifting up high. We used microspikes/barebooted all day. Winds were much lighter than forecast during the entire trip. At the summit we decided to decend via Edmands Path. Conditions here were the same as on Crawford. a...

    Packing / folding saws recommendations.

I use two hand saws for trail work (besides the big two person crosscut!), I've got a silky "big boy" folding saw, and a fanno, not sure of the model (fl-1700?). The fanno is more durable, but heavier, and bulkier (leather scabbard, non-folding). The silky cuts just as fast, if not faster, but...

    Snow Shelters

I've used it to build a few igloos with friends, and it works amazingly well no matter how dry the snow is. It think it has something to do with adding energy to the snow while packing it into the form (I post this realizing that my understanding of the science of snow is VERY limited!)? I have...

    Carter Dome 1/1/12

19 Mile trail to Carter Dome Trail. 19 mile trail got hammered during Irene! There have been some good temporary fixes in spots in some places, but this trail will either need a LOT of work in the coming years, or will need a re-route. Very little/no snow in places, even as high as the...

    Winter parking for Moosilauke

generally it gets plowed, and folks sometimes park across the street near the garage for Glencliff Sanitorium as well, although I don't know if that is explicitly allowed.
