    Irene Storm Track

The flood damage in VT has been devastating. Bridges and roads washed away all over the state.

    WMNF Closure!

Apparently the closure included the entire AT in NH, even outside the WMNF. They coordinate management of the AT in NH for the NPS. Shelters from Hanover to the ME are closed. There is a group of folks putting up hikers in their homes, as well as at the community center in Hanover (the Black...

    GPS or Map & Compass?

We all go to the woods for different reasons, and we pick our tools accordingly. I imagine we all pick the tools we think will add the most to our enjoyment of the woods, whatever our varied (recreational) purpose there is. For work, I use both, but I navigate faster with a GPS, which is...

    2011 spring wildflower thread

Thanks! And, yup, you deduced exactly where I was! I was on the West edge of the CT River Valley in Corinth. The woods were FULL of calcareous plants. And caterpillars falling from the sky. And snails. The view wasn't bad either. I could see (s to n) Cardigan, Smarts, Cube, Moosilauke (and...

    Wheeler Peak and Visc-Northeast Kingdom

Of all those peaks up there, Bald is my favorite! The view from the tower is pretty great. Pisgah was my first "real hike" in grade school....3rd or 4th grade, maybe?

What (or who) got you hiking?

Growing up in St. Johnsbury, Vermont, what else was I going to do? Especially after the local roller rink closed down. My dad got me into the woods. We spent as much time as we could hiking, hunting and fishing. I don't hunt or fish any more, but I do still walk in the woods. My dad...

1926..... A Summer on the Dome

I especially liked the entry about the porkie with the cast iron stomach needing "lead pills". It reminded me of things my great grandfather would say.:)

Traveler Loop - Baxter State Park, 8/5/2011

cool shots of a cool trip! Didn't you like the neat twisted birch glade on the way off of N. Traveler? Before I saw the picture of the moose you saw, I was guessing that you might have seen it in the meadow right near the glade. Walking through those trees, I felt like I was walking into one of...

Thanks All. We went with the plastic design and painted them brown with some Krylon Fusion paint (meant to adhere well to plastic). I'll see if I can rustle up some pictures....

Thanks for the greenie. Sue is pretty great. If you ever get the chance to see a presentation...

Thanks for the greenie. Sue is pretty great. If you ever get the chance to see a presentation she gives, do it! As you are sitting in the dark, looking at these amazing photographs, she will spontaneously let out coyote yip or other call. It makes you jump right out of your seat! BTW, she...

    Cougar came from South Dakota

I wonder what Sue Morse thinks about this Catamount? http://www.keepingtrack.org/article/articleview/3207/1/388/index.html It is amazing that the animal in question came this far east. I'm not sure how far young male mountain lions travel to find their own home range, but not this far...

    Looking For Some Ideas

This rings true for me as well. I love being in the woods for all kinds of reasons, and I imagine that my physical ability to do so will change over time. I hope to continue to enjoy the woods at whatever level I am able for as long as I can.

I'd sled. Glad the hardware is gone, and most of the short boards. The big cable will have to be several sleds!

Vermont Beer Festival - Oh wait! Camel's Hump and Mansfield

Tom, by next year's festival there will need to be a new listing in the VT VNB. Patrick Dakin, former head brewer at Norwich Inn is opening his own place in Royalton. http://freighthousebrewing.com/ He plans on it being a CSB(think CSA, but a brewery!). Also, open fermentation, I think. He was...

blowdown clearing on Moose Mtn, new trail signs?

I keep hearing that that is still there, but I haven't seen it in a while.... a couple more favorites are: one I came across somewhere on Moosilauke that says "YOU ARE LOST" and one on Smarts summit where the AT north and the old Clark Pond Loop intersect. IT is a few feet down the Clark Pond...

blowdown clearing on Moose Mtn, new trail signs?

I tried to add it....too much of a Luddite to figure it out:-( anyone?) The DOC signs....I'm not sure who did these particular signs, but I like them an awful lot! They were done at the same time as the shelter was replaced....'05 I think.
