46-year-old hiker from Hinesburg dies on Hunger Mountain trail

If this person asked his friends if they minded he hike ahead and and they all agree (and subsequently he dies) is this any different? I keep reading the phrase "leave behind" like some kind of negative action, or against a person like an abondonement when in most cases its likely an agreement...

    The Magnificent Belknaps

I have been up there a couple of times so far this spring and plan a couple more. I love the total lack of people seen after getting back into the woods. A couple of weeks ago I did around 12 miles and only saw people when hitting the Mt. Major summit and on the descent. You can spend a long...

I was on Major, Straightback and Anna this past Sunday. I had heard that Major was a nice summit (and it was) but was very suprised and how much open space there was on Straightback. Funny, your post reads like an email I sent Monday to my hiking friends..... _Thanks to BobC for the beta on...

Half Dome - permits now required + a question

What BF said. I camped exactly where BF mentions and there are a bunch of great spots there and its an easy walk from the Half Dome trail Jct. I can't speak for Little Yosemite Valley as I did not go there but you will get a better location just past HD. My site ---...

Would you pay for hiker insurance?

Thanks for the link Tim. Interesting fact - 89% of those receiving SAR assistance did not help pay for that assistance through a registration (as of the date the link was updated). Yes, I'd pay as long as the per state issue were resolved....

    Maine Bans importation of firewood

Last year when we received cofirmation of our Baxter State Park reservations it included a request to not bring firewood from outside Maine. I suspect that continues and will now state it as a requirement. No laws can be regularly enforced. Doesn't mean they shouldn't be laws if a good idea...
