In the Sierras; next to Garnet Lake under the view of Banner and Ritter Peaks. Slept under the stars, in a stock camp that was unoccupied except for the person preparing for the next group. Survived bear attack of the camps food overnight. :) Pic of site here and of camps views-...

For some close up hiking you can head to Red Rock Canyon. I only had time for one hike- I think it was Turtlehead Peak. Nothing hard, but hot and dry with a lot of scree. Cool views all around, nice red colors.
