Great to see you and SonnyM for the weekend! Building six bridges is a pretty good two days.

Marshall, Cliff, Redfield and ER, 8/6/13

Each situation is different. I was lucky my legs were fine and my head remained clear. I only had to slow down and be careful walking out. Believe me, being able to inhale about 1/4 of normal volume, is a cause for concern and signal to slow down. I always take hiking poles but at the time of...

Marshall, Cliff, Redfield and ER, 8/6/13

The ADK High Peaks area is great for designing new and different routes, even though surprises sometimes happen. For this hike, I started at the Loj and went up the Indian Pass trail, turned onto the (closed) trail to Iroquois Pass (aka Cold Brook Pass, on the other side), and climbed Marshall...

Chronic Lyme Disease - watch those ticks

Just as you thought things were complicated enough, Borrelia miyamotoi has emerged as another disease-causing organism. http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2013/07/02/new-tick-borne-illness-could-be-worse-than-lyme-disease/ By a surprising coincidence, Dr. Fallon went on an ADK chapter hike with me...

    Saddleback Via the Ski Slopes

There is a well-formed herdpath which starts right in front of the lodge and will take you to the spur trail to the AT, in a gully next to a small building.

Adirondack Winter 46 vs White Mountain 48

TCD did a good job pointing out some of the important differences between the ranges. As I have commented before, "the Whites are harder than the Adirondacks, but they're easier". A round of the White Mt 48 will total greater miles and greater total ascent than a round of the Adirondack 46...

    GPS questions

In the Garmin setup, there are various ways to collect track points (at least this is true for my GPSMAP 76Cx): distance (min. 0.01 mile or 0.01 km), time (min. 1 sec), and auto (Garmin decides). I usually use the distance mode at 0.01 mile so that it records a point every 50 feet or so. This...

    Insoles for hiking boots...

The experts at The Mountaineer recommend Montrail Enduro inserts for trail runners, and that is what I have been using for years. You warm them in the oven briefly and then put them in your shoes/boots for a custom fit.

Couple survive avalance in Mt Colden Trap Dyke

It's odd that the incident occurred on February 17 and the article was dated March 16. I saw three climbers sitting in the hiking trail at the top of the dike yesterday. Of course, we had the thaw and rain last week.

Taking care of Unfinished Business - Mansfield and Abraham (ME)

Mansfield got decidedly worse by 2:30 when we got there. The freezing fog and poor visibility were tough. So much for the nice weather forecast . . . Next time, I'm going up by Sunset Ridge too. Thanks to Ethan for uncovering the disk. I walked right over it but Dave saw it. For our final...

Double Northeast 111 (115) Winter Finish

Thanks, Dennis. You know this even better than I do!!! Hope you and Sonny will get back to doing some trail work and partying with the 46ers in August. Joe

Double Northeast 111 (115) Winter Finish

As most of you know, this report covers the 4000 foot peaks in four states (NY (48), VT (5), NH (48), and ME (14)). Procook131 and I finished the Winter 111 on 3/3/13 on Mount Mansfield in Vermont. He lives in Stowe and can see it out his door, so it was a fitting peak to finish up on. We...

    Ski approach to Signal Ridge?

The first half mile or so of the trail was relocated last summer. You now cross the bridge at the PA and go on the SW side of the brook, eliminating a rough crossing eroded by Irene. I don't know if that makes it easier or not.

    When gear goes bad...

The failure of the crampon on MSR Lightning Ascent snowshoes for me goes back to 2006. HERE is a thread from three years ago on the subject when mine finally died. Sadly, the product is not reliable for climbing in the Northeast. MSR, to their credit, has replaced hundreds if not thousands of...

A Bad Way from Marcy to Gray, plus Skylight, 2/14

This was supposed to be a fun hike, you know, do something different, try new routes, get out of the rut . . . but it didn’t turn out that way. I have gone directly from Marcy to Gray in winter several times, mostly in March but also in February. I thought the warmer weather this year would...

    Five of Maine's 4K's 2/10-2/11/13

One of our earlier planned routes was to take the AT south from Rt 16 to Crocker first, then do the loop counterclockwise. We couldn't see from Rt 16 that the AT parking area was plowed, or even where it was. After the big snow, we thought that might be a lot of trailbreaking versus walking the...

    Five of Maine's 4K's 2/10-2/11/13

Nice couple of days in the Maine woods, Dave. The BW from Redington to South Crocker was a little slow, though, 2 hours for 1.3 miles. The deep snow was enough but we had the snowstorm coming through too . . . whew! All in all, I think it beats going in there twice.

Santanoni Range, Descent via New Old Trail, 2/6

My friend Curt only has a few peaks left for his 46W and invited me to join him on a trip to Couchie. He realized that I would want to do all three and we thought we could work something out. The conditions of the herdpaths were good as described in recent reports. I was surprised that the snow...
