    Moose Population stabilized in Maine

Similarly, salmon carcasses left in the woods by bears are a significant source of soil nutrients near streams in the PNW. Doug

Engine Hill And The Bushwhack That Wasn't

I managed to drop in chest deep very close to the Davis Path just N of Isolation in mid-March, 2005. I was wearing snowshoes. The downwind (E) side of the ridge can collect a lot of snow... Doug

    Compass Recommendation

I take them off to read my compass... :) I'm near-sighted and read without them, but wear them when hiking or skiing--makes the world a bit clearer. (I suppose I could get multi-focals or progressives, but I prefer the undistorted field of view of singles for hiking and skiing.) Doug

    Compass Recommendation

The military unit that you linked looked like a gimmicked-up lensatic. (I read somewhere that lensatics are designed for directing artillery fire...) According to wikipedia, lensatics generally have an electrically-damped rotating card in an air capsule. They are subject to moisture getting in...

    New GPS problem

OK. If you can get it to connect to the computer, check for data on the internal memory--it might be corrupted. Copy it off (if you want it) and erase it. If this doesn't fix the unit, I'd suspect hardware and would send it off to Garmin for repair or replace it. Doug

    New GPS problem

Could have been bad data, a corrupted card, or a defective card. Erasing the data or reformatting the card might have solved the problem, but replacing it is a safe fix for all three potential causes. Doug

    New GPS problem

Corrupted data on the internal memory which interferes with booting can be much harder to remove than a memory card... Possible bad cable or a driver problem are my first thoughts. I sometimes require a second try (preceded by power cycling or disconnecting the cable) to establish the...

    New GPS problem

Sounds like an intermittent or a timing race (during startup). Try removing the memory card*, and if that helps, try reseating the card. Beyond that, it could be a hardware problem. If so, send it in to Garmin. * The card might be defective or might have too many maps on it. (I have never...

    Are We a Dying Breed?

I'm one of those older folks who still remembers the good old days on rec.backcountry... I didn't find it that hard to skip the trolls and flame wars. There were some very knowledgeable folks there (it was also international) and I learned a lot from them. I also liked that it was...

    Edmands Path winter access

On occasion canid (fox? coyote?) and moose tracks have shown me the way. (I suspect they scouted out the trail before the snow fell.) Unfortunately moose posthole the trail... Doug

    Resue on Mt. Washington

I agree. I keep a dedicated GPS (with user replaceable batteries) running to record a track and, if necessary, for navigation. My phone is turned off to conserve the batteries and is generally only used in emergencies. I make sure all batteries are fully charged before starting out. (The AA...

    Edmands Path winter access

Proceed with caution--the section of Crawford Path between Pierce and Eisenhower can collect deep snow with spruce traps deep enough for one to disappear. Doug

Did you ever spend an unplanned night in the woods?

I almost had a solo unplanned night out when I suddenly found myself lying on the snow with a broken femur. (A snow snake had jumped out and grabbed my ski tip...) It was 2-3 pm and I was ~4 mi from the trailhead on one of the backcountry trails connected to the Waterville Valley XC system...

Did you ever spend an unplanned night in the woods?

I too completed Pinnacle Gully in the dark (we had had to wait for a party above to clear the climb) and solo (my second had backed off after the first pitch). I had never been down the Escape Hatch, so I headed directly for Lions Head. My only problem was postholing through a snow slab on the...

    Camera Tripods

I don't carry a tripod in the woods. (They are too big and heavy and I usually shoot handheld even if a tripod is available. I generally shoot stills so stabilization is usually less of an issue than for video.) If I need stabilization, I lean or place the camera on/against a tree or rock...

Ever needed two headlamps (or lights)?

You called? :) Lithium primary (non-rechargable) cells have the lowest temp limits (nominally ~-40F) and the best shelf life (~10yrs). NiMH and LIon (lithium ion, rechargable) are next best (~-20F), alkalines next (~0F), and leave your carbon-zinc (dry) cells at home. (These temps are...

Economy Version Of Marmot DriClime Windshirt

The traditional Inuit outfit was two layers: a thin leather inner layer (ie a baselayer) under a heavy windproof coat. Ventilation was used to dump excess heat. Doug

Economy Version Of Marmot DriClime Windshirt

While wool may be slower to dry, it is generally warmer when wet. Back when I started white water boating (done primarily in spring over cold water) if you didn't have a wet suit raingear over wool was next best. BTW, Stephenson is a proponent of and source of vapor barrier clothing...

Economy Version Of Marmot DriClime Windshirt

Its a trade-off: letting more moisture out would be more comfortable (drier) but would result in more heat loss. <speculation> The system might work well (best?) with a wool baselayer. </speculation> Doug
