    Ankle Roll

A handy way to reduce ankle rolls is to only hike when the snow is deep enough to keep the rocks under the snow from tipping your snowshoes. :D

    The Psychology of (not?) exercising

I wonder if that study counted only those people who "exercise" or if it included those who do other things that make the body fit. I walk the dogs every day and I get to the gym most (for the resistive that keeps my weight up) but there are a thousand other things I do that keep me fit. My...

Random thoughts on being prepared... or not...

Point taken. The use of home heating oil had not entered my mind. The loss of electricity at the stations was the driver to my initial response.

Something to think about having spent a few years in a place my generator gets lots of use. In the real nasty storms you sometimes have to travel to find gasoline for a non-permanent (propane) generator. All stations have gasoline. Some have diesel.

The Hurricane Exchange or "Brother can you spare a 'D' ?"

Nice, big, quiet Honda Generator with an inverter so I don't fry my computers (work at home) but it cost a bit more than $1800:(. The GenTran system of breakers Tim describes works well (one of my 10 breakers is the office). The Honda is quieter than the neighbor's fancy propane powered...

    Crampons for Non Rigid Boots

I've used a pair of AustriAlpin 12 point for a number of years without problem. I keep saying I'll tweak the straps to make them a little easier to lock down but never get around to it.

How to upset the locals regarding trail-head parking

I always found it rather odd that folks participating in an athletic activity like hiking will often seek the closest parking spot at the trail head (or side of the road) to avoid that long walk to the trail where they're going for a long walk. I see it at my local gym too. The place with all...

How Windy is too Windy - Mt Washington

A bit after he fact but a few cents from one of lighter stature (5-11, 155lb). Much of the cone and upper Jewel is a bit of a rock hop. I've often find that I can get a nice rhythm going on these surfaces and move along quite well. Toss in in a strong or or, even more so, gusty wind and I get...
