    Rescue in the Ossipees

Kudos to the newly formed Lakes Region Search and Rescue Team for their help here. The newest volunteer S&R group in NH is off to a solid start.

    Observatory Sues Cog

Love when people get into arguments over who has the rights to land that was stolen from natives.

Drifting in Northern Baxter State Park

I remember those! And thank you. I recalled this story when I was reading the other thread where I posted. I enjoyed reading it again myself. I had forgotten some of the details of that adventure!

    Hiking / outdoor ‘learning experiences’

This one turned out to be quite an adventure. Fortunately I had a positive attitude and time. https://www.vftt.org/forums/showthread.php?59378-Drifting-in-Northern-Baxter-State-Park&highlight=baxter

AMC granted new "Pooper Chopper" Heli Site

"If you build it, they are will come." New huts, hotels, parking lots, buildings, and other facilities allow for and encourage overuse of an already overloved area. IMO, no new above treeline construction by anyone and no new parking lots at the base of overcrowded areas. The Alpine zone in the...

    Spring Flooding - happening now

The Basin and walkways and bridge were all submerged. Video footage was crazy. It looked like it was reclaiming the land. I was at Huntington Gorge in VT on the weekend. The flow was the highest I've ever seen Saturday.

    And then there were 47?

Tim, I think that's an excellent analogy if you also make the NH48 pursuit a "direttissima" or another continuous end to end hike or something like the SSW48 where there becomes a noticeable and cumulative cost for too many side miles.

    And then there were 47?

He may not have finished. There are far more people who start a thru hike than actually finish. Those spending too much time investigating side trips don't finish. There are many, many worthy side trips along the 2,000+ mile trail. One needs to pick and choose carefully. You also summit some...

Fatality on Mt Washington in Huntingtons Ravine

I'll respectfully add a third option and I agree with these two. Mr. Gagne skillfully walked a very delicate line in writing that book. He had the blessing of Kate's surviving husband who is still grieving I'm sure. He was not only wise to avoid judgment, he showed compassion in leaving it off...

Fatality on Mt Washington in Huntingtons Ravine

I'm going to go out on a limb and suggest that was meant as a joke. TJ doesn't flame from my experience. He can correct me if I'm wrong. Yes, Bill is a legend in the valley. He taught my WFR class many moons ago. Tons of respect for him and what he has done.

    Southwest Twin for Winter

Congratulations Tim and group. Great pics. That seems like a tough one to get anytime. I've not yet been. I was on South Twin last Sunday by that route and it definitely looked like the Twinway had not seen any activity recently.

Watch the GPS or the Trail

I find myself grateful that I began hiking at a time before gps, cell phones, and other screen technology. There was something pure about seeking the address to request NEHH info and getting a manila envelope filled with scratchy photocopies of route notes. It was a slow, deliberate, enjoyable...

Watch the GPS or the Trail

This is a key point becoming less obvious to hikers all the time it appears. Read the trail description from a guide book, note the features, distances, and changes in elevation. People have successfully hiked the Whites for over 100 years. GPS doesn't replace reading about the terrain one is...

Watch the GPS or the Trail

Ammonoosuc Ravine often has numerous rogue trails leading to ski routes. The few tenths between the hut and treeline can also be confusing in low visibility. Followers beware. Personally, I don't lead hikes on trails with which I'm not familiar. YMMV.

The wood fired pizza place in Gorham is closed

That's a surprise from the crowds I'd sometimes see there. Tough town to survive in the restaurant business. I'm a fan of GHOP but I rarely get pizza there. I really like the BBQ place in the old Pizza Hut. We'll see if they can hold on. Mr. Pizza does consistently well even if I would rank it...

    POLL: Your longest day?

I was curious who owned the NH plate. Maybe you. Hardcore. Edit: I have not done these races but I follow them loosely and have seen photos of the license plate wall.
