Transitioning Back to Work after a Thru-Hike

Two quotes I copied from Running the Sahara “The life lesson is you better live that experience while you are in it because it’s gonna be gone. “ “All limitations we have are self imposed. It’s where we set the limits.” I feel anguish each and every time I return from the mountains...

Are we hardwired to hate exercise? article

Dittos! I will never relate to it and and have no desire to. I believe that my obsession with being out in nature is as strong to me as is my peer's obsession to spend money in a mall, going on cruises, etc. I made an attempt to join in with the "other side" and I hated every minute. We...

Are we hardwired to hate exercise? article

I was brought up in a rural area (at the time), and we had a small farm. The most I did as a youth was play outside, work a little on the farm, and ride my bike in the back 40. Had no exposure to anything else. This all changed when I heard the "call of the wild" in my mid 20's. I got a...

Are we hardwired to hate exercise? article

I don't love the artificial thing but found that even with my level of activity working at home and hiking with my dogs as I age my body was withering. I read you lose muscle mass with age so I went back to the gym. It only took 1 week before I started to feel stronger and more flexible...

    Grout Pond, VT in winter

Thanks for the update. Have been wanting to go out there with my pups but was concerned about snowmobile activity. I don't want them to have an encounter with one. I would go midweek so hopefully most of the folks would be at work. That is one very beautiful place.

    Plus size women's winter gear?

Pudgy.....have her look in the men's section of places like EMS, REI, and whatever other mtn stores service hikers and outdoor fanatics in your area. Women's clothes are sometimes cut to fit models, and men's clothes give you more room to flex and move about. Also, have her check the ones...

Nice article on the Clarks Trading Post Bear in the Globe

In response to your last question...only if you want a big fine and possible jail sentence. I believe they call this animal abuse because they are domestic pets. I don't think we can compare a circus atmosphere and living behind bars with a "natural habitat" protective environment. There...

    Metal Water Bottle Danger

This is why you should not use metal water dishes for dogs outside in the winter. Their tongues can also adhere to frozen metal.

    Winter Hiking & Snowshoe Advice

I found a pair instep crampons in my closet and tried them on for fun last winter. Can't believe I sued to hike with those awful things and thought they were great. I recall being sore but everyone was wearing them. You had to be cool. I was so thrilled when I got my first full crampons.

Nice article on the Clarks Trading Post Bear in the Globe

No denying that. As I read the article i substituted my name for the word "bear". I couldn't help but reflect on what it would be like to spend an entire life doing something that is so opposite what nature intended me to be. Would I like to live in an enclosure to be on exhibit and taken out...

Beginning winter hiking - which trails to start out on?

Another peak I love in winter is Mt Cardigan. It's not talked about much but it is a great mountain.

Beginning winter hiking - which trails to start out on?

It very well could have been beyond Pierce and toward Eisenhower. You are in a better position to know this if you are acquainted with them personally. I had second hand info and something could have easily been lost or added in the translation. I was not given an exact bearing of where he was...

Beginning winter hiking - which trails to start out on?

Be careful on Crawford path/ Pierce. I know of a fella hiker thru a friend who had quite the fiasco up there. They were all experienced hikers and he left the group to head down because he just wanted out. On his way back, in a whiteout, he lost the trail and followed a river. He wound up...
