    Looking for moose....

Nice! Moose sightings are exhilerating, aren't they?! Hopefully the cat will come to understand his good fortune and appreciate you :)

last chance for bare ground bushwacking

...and I forgot to mention a cool animal sighting. I saw a predator move through some trees but I could not ID it. It was either a coyote, bobcat or lynx by the size and color....no tracks. As I tried to get closer I saw a snowshoe hare shoot out of the brush and run uphill. The bunny was...

last chance for bare ground bushwacking

It's unlikely, IMO, to be from a bullet. Nearly every shed antler I find has puntures that go half-way through the antler, and these holes are from the tines of another bull's antlers. Also, they don't smash into each other, like rutting rams do. Instead, they just stand they approach each...

last chance for bare ground bushwacking

...most likely...so I took advantage of the nice day and went exploring for moose habitat on a 4,000'er... on a south-facing slope at ~3600'... moose hair... noticed this big guy watching me...he had already dropped his antlers... moments later I found this one... now...

    2 rescued on Chocorua

I agree with a lot of this, but... The Piper is almost entirely on the east slope, all the way to the saddle with First Sister, south of the summit. Imagine when you break out from the trees and see the summit. You then hike south and completely exposed for a 1/4 mile(?) to the summit. On...

    2 rescued on Chocorua

They intended to descend the same trail they climbed; the Piper. The Piper is on the east side of the mountain. To be on the Brook Trail mistakenly, you would have to make 3 wrong turns at junctions with signs, if memory serves. Furthermore, when does it occur to you that you are facing a...

Thirteen Falls ATTEMPT from Lincoln Woods - ARG!

OK, I know i'll never win this one about footware, but it's easy for me to run in my Crestas...I've jogged downhill nonstop from Chocorua summit...I know it's considered alien to be able to jog in leather boots but I do it all the time. OK...all done ;)

Thirteen Falls ATTEMPT from Lincoln Woods - ARG!

I was scared from the mention of the footwear choice  why? WHY? Then, as Maddy was, I was on the edge of my seat with fear for you (yes, I know you made it to tell the tale, I like to "be there" ). Awesome choice to turn around...a result of listless hiking ? ;) Isn't it amazing how...

Slippery Brook Trail area, Dec. 10th

Those are definately from eating. Antler polishing marks are seen much less frequently than the results of browsing on the bark. A telltale sign is the little marks on the bare trunk; these are teeth marks. They bite the tree and get a grip on the bark then tear the bark in long strips.

Slippery Brook Trail area, Dec. 10th

nice dry bare ground at lower elevations... Chandler Brook... a flat area not too far from the trail caught my eye on the map...finally went exploring over there...found a nice fresh antler... despite sunshine, a steady flurry became about an inch of very dry cold powder above...

Star Lake Moose - How is she doing?

It's probably quite a nice place to be for a moose. Before these zones had people on a regular basis, there may have been lots of moose hanging out. There's lots of wind to keep the bugs at bay. Becca makes a good point about water once everything freezes. I wonder if that will cause her...

Star Lake Moose - How is she doing?

Hey Sabrina!!! Concerned I am not....interested in her actions and thoughts I am... Of corse, I'm rooting for her health, but I don't think she's in any danger. I'd bet she can leave whenever she wants. It's a cool mystery :)
