definately, the trail's intent was to lead to the peak...it is what it is...
I hiked a trailless peak Sunday to enjoy some moose habitat. I intended to explore the magic zone of ~2900', on the west and south sides of this mountain, which is in the Dry River Wilderness...

Personal preference of corse, but I can't imagine having them in my hands...I use my hands while hiking....taking picks, grabbing branches, drinking, eating, wiping sweat, etc., etc......can't imagine not having free hands.
I hiked with some peakbaggers to the trailless summit of Mt. Paugus. BeccaM, Ed and Bob "needed" Mt. Paugus for some reason so dire that lightning encountered just shy of the summit was not even considered.

a few comments...
1) are you sure your ISO was 100? Even at f/2.8 I'm surprised at that.
2) trailing stars... there are two factors: lens size and angular distance from the celestial pole(very close to Polaris)....
-a smaller lens can take a longer exposure before trailing...
