A bunch of rescues last weekend

I think that a competent solo hiker is less inclined to take risks that would put them in danger, than would a hiker who relied on the assessment of a group leader in most all circumstances.

    Trail sign replicas

FYI, the AMC trails department often bestows retiring longtime adopters, region leaders, and/or other volunteers who have committed noble service with an old sign that was in need of replacing.

Dry River Cut Off/ Mt Eisenhower Trail / Dry RiverTrail

Oh, yes! A quiet remote verdant forest without human traffic is pure heaven to me! The Mt. Eisenhower Trail is a treasure to me, as is the Dry River Cutoff. I try to plan my routes so I don't see other people. Weird stuff, like across the Sandwich Range (Piper...

Dry River Cut Off/ Mt Eisenhower Trail / Dry RiverTrail

The Dry River Trail is closed. You can make a wonderful loop using Crawford Path, Mizpah Cutoff, Mt Clinton Trail, Dry River Cutoff, Mt Eisenhower Trail, Mt Eisenhower Loop, Webster Cliff Trail, Crawford Path. Bring a map for the intersection of Dry River Cutoff/Mt Eisenhower Trail area -...

    Alphabet Photography Game

E for my son, Ethan, on Mt. Eisenhower! The Mt. Eisenhower Loop is in my trail maintenance region of the Southern Presies, so we get to hike it every year. Ethan is a sophomore at Quinnipiac University. Ahhhh.... that may be useful when we get to the Qs!

    Sleeping Pad For Backpacking

I use an inflatable Therm-a-Rest pad, but instead of folding it down to store it, I deflate it and roll it into a tube. I place the tube into my empty pack and then unroll the tube so it creates a cylinder. I then pack all my gear into the cylinder. This keeps the pack stable, and the cylinder...

    Anybody Know This Guy?

*waves to Ellen* FYI: I sent the gentleman a friendly note and explained why branches are trimmed methodically. I also invited him to learn more about trail maintenance. His blog is a lot of fun to read. I wish we had such things available on the Internet when I began hiking. Alas, I do...

    Anybody Know This Guy?

Thanks for the heads up. The trails he traveled are in my region, although they are very well-maintained to standard 4' x8'. AMC hiking trails are not maintained for winter travel. I'll consult with the ptb and contact him regarding his actions. He certainly made it easy to do so. FWIW, tree...

    Trail Adopting 2014

Back in the day, it was suggested to me that maintaining a trail was a great way to give back for all the enjoyment of hiking. I have been a trail maintainer for 20 years. Thanks to Giff and everyone else who does this volunteer work. The AMC and the FS work together to protect the trails...

Which Trails Get Broken Out The Fastest In The Whites

The Internet has forever changed winter hiking, removing the challenge and uncertainty. When I finished the winter 4000 footers, (nearly two decades ago), I seldom encountered winter travelers, let alone a broken trail. A summit reached after a full day (or more) of breaking trail on 30"...

    Bolles Trail

The Bolles Trail is a super nice walk in the woods. I have hiked from the southern end to the Kanc and back, just for the fun of it! It also makes a nice x-c ski trail, with little traffic and a pleasant grade.

    Status of Dry River Trail?

Dry River Cutoff was passable Labor Day weekend and there is flagging tape at the Mt. Eisenhower Brook crossing. A combination of Mt. Eisenhower Trail and Dry River Cutoff make for a fine (and quiet) loop off Crawford Path/Webster Cliff Trail. As far as I know, anyone caught on the Dry River...

Belknap Rage Killer - The "Valley View" Trail

I am dying here! Yes, it is the hardest trail south of Central Gully, for sure!

    NH 48 at midnight

That sounds like awesome fun! I have hiked a number of peaks this way, but not all! Do you usually camp out nearby or hike until dawn?
