    Mt Davis On Montalban Ridge

Jericho Road is a well-graded dirt road. No problem at all in my Hyundai Elantra. The road is gated about a mile before the trailhead, but it's an easy walk. Rocky Branch Trail from the trailhead to Stairs Col Trail has been open for nearly a full year. The shelter at the intersection sees a...

    Mt Davis On Montalban Ridge

Your described route, using Stairs Col Trail, is lovely. There are gorgeous campsites atop the Giant Stairs. I'd camp there, hike to Davis, picking up water at the small brook crossing on the way back to your camp. A fantastic weekend outing!

Ultralight 1-person, free-standing tent. Anyone own an LLBean Microlight FS1?

I use a Big Agnes Fly Creek UL1. It's free-standing, although I use my trekking poles to stake out the footbox. I've had this tent for a few years and it is easy to set up, well-ventilated, sturdy and competent. 38" high, 33oz with all the bells and whistles...

    Eisenhower via Edmunds Path

Thanks for posting, hike492! Your report is super-helpful to the Southern Presie trail maintainers who are hoping to get a work trip in this week :)

Building a sled to pull winter camping gear

I use a 48" plastic kiddie sled, modified with PVC reinforcements and 6' PVC handles, so I stay out in front and save my calves. Carabiners, attached to a thin climbing rope that is fed through the PVC apparatus, hold it to a beefy fanny-style pack. Also, it may help you, sjhbos, to know that I...

    Animal Encounters on the Trail

I thought I'd be funny and hoot back to the barred owl that called its distinctive hoot in the middle of the night. I was alone in the Langdon Shelter last fall.... alone until the owl landed in front of the shelter! "Uh... sorry!" I said. He gave an indignant squawk and flew off.

    Winter hiking boots for kids

My kid always hiked in Sorels when he was that size. He did a lot of winter hiking and snowshoeing in them. You can throw a pair of spikes on them for better traction. And you can still use the boots for shoveling the driveway or to go sledding.

NH hike safe cards available starting January 1st

It's only $35 for the in-state license (I live in NH). And I'll get to fish! I don't currently fish, so it's a good excuse to learn something new. I'm actually quite looking forward to it!

Mt. Langdon Shelter to Jericho Road bushwhack

I scouted around in the woods off Jericho Road last week, but the riverbank is a real mess on the west side of the Rocky Branch. I ended up just driving over to the Mt. Langdon TH and hitting Mt. Parker Trail that way. Nice hike- gorgeous views of the southern Presies!

Mt. Langdon Shelter to Jericho Road bushwhack

Thanks, Joe! I think you're right about the woods being good for this one. The purpose of this trip is to hike Mt. Parker/Resolution by the shortest mileage possible. I wouldn't let the river crossing bother me, especially if it is at the end of the trip. However, if I start from the parking...

That's great news. I <3 DRS #3 (although it kinda tilts down toward the front, so I like to sleep with my head toward the inside!)

worth a new "Best restaurant for post-hike dinner in Whites" thread ?

In the north, you can't go wrong with Mr. Pizza in Gorham. Despite its name, I have never ordered pizza there, but everything else on the menu has been terrific. It is a fine place to eat and drink after a hike- and before a shower. In the south, Almost There in Albany is consistently good...

topo map survey - Need your input

    1. Do you carry a topo map in your pocket, in your pack or leave it back in your vehicle? (this should be an excellent topo, not something designed to plan hikes) I carry a topo in the lower front right pocket of zip leg hiking pants. Note that this is not the same front pocket that most pants...
