Bonds, Sunday March 11 (Sat. as backup date)

Have a great time on the traverse! Alex and I enjoyed that hike, particularly the walk between Bond and Bondcliff. Fingers crossed for perfect weather!

    20/20 Vision Quest

We had the pleasure of meeting Randy Pierce on Jefferson today. Extremely nice fellow. Enjoyed meeting his support team, too. They were all doing fine and enjoying the day, which certainly felt much warmer and a lot less windy than we expected, given the forecast.

    Highest or Longest?

Many congrats! Owls Head is a long one indeed. It's always nice to get that one out of the way. I know what you mean about the return elevation on the Black Pond bushwhack. We didn't appreciate it either. I have a feeling that on the next bluebird day, there are going to be a ton of people...

Another couple of rescues over the weekend.

I've long believed that numbers alone don't do much to help in terms of winter hiking...if you're not prepared, then it doesn't help to go with others who also aren't prepared. Glad the other folks were able to help.

Solo Winter Presidential Traverse on President's Day - 2/20/12

Kudos! What a hike -- congrats on braving the wind and making it all the way across. Great photos -- thanks for sharing.

    Wildcat pass required for hikers?

Unless the woman has the opportunity to respond on this forum herself, in order to present her side of the story, then I agree that naming her is bad form. There's no way for her to defend herself, so we're only getting one side of that particular story. Also agree that there shouldn't be any...

Congrats on a spectacular hike! Thanks for sharing the gorgeous photos.

    Kahootla microspikes

Love microspikes. Alex and I have used them on almost every winter hike over the past four winter seasons. I have yet to replace the ones I originally bought. As everyone else has already said, they are not a substitute for crampons. For steep snowfields, I'm now more comfortable in...

Mt Cabot Deep Freeze - 2/13/12

Nice TR and a great collection of photos! Especially like the one of the cabin dripping with icicles...and the one showing an empty bottle of Jack Daniels next to some rosary beads. :D Glad your four had a great day in the woods in spite of the freezing temps.

Congratulations to Tim C for another 48-in-one-winter finish!

Tim C. completed his 2011-2012 NH48 winter-single-season yesterday! A big congratulations to him! Alex and I were honored to be there for his finish. I'm having trouble posting pictures -- folks can either visit my Facebook Page for the photos (link below) or perhaps, Tim C, you could post a...

A Freezing Frosty good time on Isolation for a 48 Finish!

Congrats to Kate for her 48th! Nice TR, sounds like a fun (albeit chilly!) time in the woods.

Backyard Coyote. First time we've seen one in the backyard.

I'm not an expert, but I'd guess that it's a hybrid. Looks like one, anyway, from my (untrained) eye. Bigger and bulkier than the traditional coyote. Beautiful animal. Great pictures.

Zealand and the Bonds with Alex, Feb. 3-4, 2012

Jason, I agree with your account, except I believe I overshot the turn. Also, I had hoped to cut across the snowfield instead of going down toward the intersection. I didn't look at the compass before stepping out, that was my mistake. The teachable moment would have been taking the steps to...

Zealand and the Bonds with Alex, Feb. 3-4, 2012

Thanks! Hope to see you and yours this spring or summer. :) I don't carry pots, lol. I carry what I feel is the bare minimum to keep my kid(s) and I safe should we need to spend the night out in subzero temperatures. Would a traverse with less stuff be easier (assuming there were no...
